This appeared on the BBC website earlier:

A discussion of how US craft brews are having an impact on this side of the pond. Nice to see American beer acknowledged as more than just BMC.

The fact that this is being picked up by the mainstream media shows how the 'craft' trend is accelerating (however you choose to define craft). So, how long before the bubble bursts?

Oh it's that time of year for the news again :stuck_out_tongue:

Also Dark Star isn't one word. They always get the simple stuff wrong.

Yep. And I bet CAMRA's still doing the Potteresque Ministry of Magic thing denying the very existence of UK craft beer.

Just found this article while browsing through the BBC website. Perhaps this should be posted in the general forum since most BA's probably don't regularly check the UK forum. I can imagine a few BAs taking exception to the generalization of craft beer being associated with hipsterdom and counterculture but I'd say overall, it's a pretty good write-up. Much better than some of the press that shows up in American media.

You know that is a good point. I can't remember the last time I ever had a problem getting a new release of any UK brewery. If the crafty thing really gains momentum then we just might see the origins of the whole unattainable whale thing over here.

Actually that makes me glad about the people from my university ale society talking about the "special reserve" King Goblin from Tescos

Yeah, that wouldn't be so great. Although I have derived enjoyment from reading US contributors to the forums complaining that they couldn't get a certain beer near them and thinking to myself that it was available in a shop near me

It's a trade-off I'd be prepared to take. Increased interest in craft beer means better beer in supermarkets and pubs, if this means that I'm not able to get some beers that turn into whales then it really doesn't change anything to me because I probably wouldn't have justified the price point to myself in the first place.

I find it annoying that the term "craft beer" has been misinterpreted. It's an American term which doesn't really apply here as practically all our breweries would qualify as "craft brewers" there. All my local brewers have been making it since the day they opened.

We can't even agree on what the term means here in America so it's use in in the UK just adds another layer of confusion. It's better than calling them all 'microbreweries' but it's far from perfect.

Many many new breweries here are using the term just as there are a number of UK craft beer festivals over the year. They must have some shared idea of what the term means.

I'm afraid the message is out. The turnover of the 14 craft keg taps at The Hanging Bat in Edinburgh is steady at the very least. Looking on twitter I see more UK based craft beery folks all the time. Def not CAMRA types.

Ignore what marquis says. While its essentially true, trying to use this relatively new term for every British microbrewery just seems like petty a one up. Most people will agree that the term craft beer is used to denote US influenced beers, I.e. ones taking their main influence from the modern US microbrewery, and that It's useful in that purpose.

Wow, Reprob8 has turned up, offered nothing to the discussion and offered a snide remark. Plus ca change. Sadly, you've lost points for not dropping in your usual brag about how you know people in the industry/are on a judging panel.
