    Hey all.

Dark Horse Bourbon barrel Plead the Fifth.

Its listed on Beeradvocate at 14% abv.
Rate beer lists the beer as 10% abv.
I have a bottle of 2012 that says on the label its 11%.

So what is the correct ABV for this beer? Which ABV do I believe? Has the ABV varied each year? Why 3 different numbers reporting different ABV levels... all from what wouuld seem to be a reputable source!?!?

Help clear up this personal mystery! Cheers!

Dark Horse has varied some of their ABVs. Double Crooked Tree used to be more than its current 12%. It's possible that the same thing happened with BBPt5, though, having never had it, I can't speak to that with any authority.

I noticed this during a tasting this past weekend. It looks like DH reused the label from the regular Plead the 5th and just waxed the cap and added a "vintage 2012" sticker.

I'm guessing they can get away with having a wrong label since it's a brewery only distribution.

I'd trust the bottle.. It may vary from year to year, but I would imagine there is a legal obligation to accurately post the ABV on a beer label.

Maybe they dropped the abv to tap into other markets. I'm in Ohio and we have a 12% limit.

It was a brewery only release and if OH really does have that limit its ******ed and should be changed. (Im assuming your still allowed to buy rum whiskey and just about any liquor I can think of which is much higher)

Agreed. The law needs changed. I didn't see the barrel aged part. Whoops!

I can't stand the 12% Ohio law either. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I still think there are plenty of other states with similar laws.

Anyways, I'm sick and tired of mothers against drunk driving (MADD) ruining a part of the beer world I've been begging to experience. Pardon my French, but they are all fucking freaks. I'm against drunk driving and teen drinking as well, but I don't lobby against laws that will never and I mean never change the outcome of these topics. Since when is a 16yo going to think about buying 1 ~15% RIS over a case of bud light?

They tried to change it but I think it fell through. 21% would have helped. I'm of the opinion that if it is brewed it should be available, distribution willing. I'm sick of going from state to state to get my big beers. I hate trading unless its IP. I can find plenty of stuff to drink with the limit but having a higher or even better unlimited abv would be preferable.

Another thing is I don't think it will make much difference if that 16 yr old (or many people even over 21) has a 12% vs a 15% beer they still don't belong on the road.

Or many people even over 21? How about... no one?
