A couple bars in Austin have been advertising bcbcs on their tap lists, and it's not cheap. I have tried both and there is no coffee whatsoever (call me crazy if you have been to them and do taste/smell it). One of the bars was called out on twitter by a patron, and they blamed it on the distributor. I know that one bar is still advertising the coffee after I told them there is no coffee in it. I do not know about the bar that was called out on twitter. Has anyone else in Austin experienced this? (Especially people that have previously tried cbcs) I just want to figure out if this is, in fact, the distributors fault, or if the brewery is labeling kegs wrong or what. I don't like being mislead on my beers when paying this much for a pour.

It happened at JK (Stanley's?), too, and I think at least one more place. At JK, at least, the keg was unlabeled.

(This is all if I remember correctly.)

EDIT: I'd like to add that the difference should be really evident, even to people who haven't had it, and even if it had been 2012 BCBCS.

I had it at Hi Hat in mid December, and they said it was BCBCS, but there's just no fucking way it was. I had 2012 BCBCS in late October on tap at Hopfields and it was delicious and still had tons of coffee flavor. The stuff at Hi Hat tasted like pure BCBS.

Several places like bangers and hopfields advertised that they had it but it was indeed BCBS and the kegs were marked wrong. Hopfields had it outlined quite large in their New Years Eve special event that they would have it and Im sure there were a few that went for that.

We had some at Blackstar Coop the day of the BCBS release and they advertised it as Coffee.. and nope, no coffee whatsoever.

I was at the launch at the Austin Whole Foods on black Friday and the reps said the coffee this year took much more of a backseat than in previous years. That being said: you've all been around the keg more than once and likely know what you're talking about when you say there was no coffee in it.

I should also note that the bartender at Black Star said the keg was not labeled, but the tap handle was coffee. I'm 100% sure what we tried that night was not BCBCS.

    Well that sucks.

On a related note: I was recently really surprised and skeptical when someone I met at a tasting told me a little hole in the wall bar here in Dallas had BCBS on tap. When I called and asked if they had "Bourbon County Stout" on tap they put me on hold and came back a minute later and told me they had Goose Island stout on tap, but not "Bourbon County Stout". I went in and it was BCBS. So yes the bartender was ignorant and didn't know their product, but she was reading off of the leg when she answered me. Basically it seems like they're being sloppy labeling their legs.

That's probably why she got it wrong, she read someone's leg instead of the keg. I don't know why I even bothered considering what she said after she told me she read a leg. Now I feel like an idiot.

I've has this year's coffee, and the coffee is immediately evident. If you're not tasting coffee, its not BCBCS. No way you'd miss it.

To reiterate what others have said, a few places in Austin tapped what they were told was BCBCS but the kegs were in fact regular BCBS. I went to Bangers on Saturday because they had this on the menu:

It was exactly the same as the BCBS I had on tap in Houston. Zero coffee. And I've had this year's BCBCS from the bottle recently and the coffee is very obvious. We brought the issue up with the beer manager. He said the distributor told him it was coffee. He called their Goose Island rep and he set the record straight: there are no kegs of BCBCS in Texas yet.

Edit—I'm still peeved by this. It's kind of absurd that they went through the trouble to type this up and hype it on social media without first tasting the beer and realizing IT HAS NO COFFEE.

    What was the rep's source?

I'm kidding, thanks for the info. Hopfields has/had "BCBCS" for $1/oz, which isn't too bad for reg BCBS, but still not a deal overall.
@AdamR46 Looks like we didn't get BCBCS :/ But it was still nice hanging out!

A couple of people in Austin told me the BCBCS at Hopfields was also just BCBS. Still, it's worth $1 an ounce, but it shouldn't be advertised as something that it isn't.

The bottled version this year seems to be very popular too.

It's more subdued than the 2012 is, right now. Somehow.
