I have a local fellow in San Diego looking to trade me the following bundle:

    Heady Topper (x1) (Canned 10/30/14)
2013 Bourbon County Brand Stout (x4)
Fat Head's Head Hunter (x1) (2 months old)
    Cigar City Jai Alai (x1)

All beers have been kept in the fridge since he got them. He is claiming this bundle had a trade value of $105. Is this a good deal or am I getting ripped off?

Thank you for the help on this guys

Are these kegs? If not, then he seems to be charging a "finder's fee" of about $70 or so.

    I wouldn't say that's a good deal-

    heady (4.00) + BCBS (24.00) + head hunter (4.00) + jai alai (4.00) = $36.00

    And I'm overestimating the prices

No they are not kegs. The quantities are the number of bottles/cans he is offering. Since we are in San Diego and these beers do not exist here, how much of a "finder's fee" does that justify?

Sorry, I was being a bit tongue-in-cheek with the kegs comment, because he is grossly overpricing the bottles. You should trade with someone else. You might not be able to find all of those beers easily on your own, but you can certainly find someone who won't gouge you for them.

Is this local fellow on BA?

I have no idea if he is on BA. From talking to him, I'm getting the impression that he traded for them and now is trying to forward the shipping cost that he paid on to get them on to me.

That's more than just shipping costs, unless the box was shipped overnight from Antarctica with lead weights inside. If you still want to pursue this, at least ask him to break down the cost he's assigning to each bottle. Maybe one of them has a $50 bill taped to it.

I already told him no. He did break it down for me though. He wanted $20 per bottle/can of the Heady and the BCBS. He claims he can get that all day long and would be taking a loss if he sold it for any cheaper. The Jai Alai and Head Hunter he was going to "throw in" for an extra $5

Jeez, did he offer you volcano insurance, too? Good for you for cutting off negotiations.

If he is your buddy I would trust him but a canned date of 10/30 to San Diego is pretty fast...

HT doesn't have a canned date. And since shipping from VT to CA is a week, it's almost certainly bs that that is how fresh the HT is.

He sounds very generous throwing in a 2 month old Head Hunter as an extra.

Fish vs. fishing...You got the answer already, but I figured I'd give you the "formula".

You can pretty much Google the price of any beer. You'll get some variations, but you can get a sense for an average price per can/pack. Considering you can trade for pretty much any beer out there, unless the beer is "whale" or "near whale" status (something new traders probably don't look for anyway), you can bet that you can trade for it closer to average price. As for shipping cost, 10-15lbs box coast-to-coast costs about $15-20.

Last, but not least...never buy/trade for any IPA that is older than 4 weeks. There are very few exceptions, Heady being one, but I'd still want Heady fresher than 4 weeks.
