Huge fan of this brew. It has a creaminess in taste that I have not tasted in other IPAs. Just wondering if there are any other brews with a similar taste.
Almost bought a single of Be Hoppy last weekend. Next time I go to Ryan and Casey’s in Greenfield I’ll have to pick some up. Can’t think of an IPA I’ve had that I’d describe as creamy, but what I’ve had from Maine Beer Co has been really smooth.
Be Hoppy was my gateway IPA drug. I still love it, but more for the fact that it is 100% pleasant than because it has any distinct profile among other west coast style IPAs. It has a deliciousness that I find appealing. I'm very sensitive to malty IPA's either as part of a traditional style or because the beer has sat too long on the shelf. I don't go out of the way to pick it up anymore as there is an abundance of more interesting stuff IMO. However, we had a thread a while back about how Be Hoppy is often a welcome Oasis at bars that carry Inbev and Sam products (except for the new Sam NE IPA, which I like). Jake n Joes stopped carrying it, which has reduced my visits there by more than 50%.
Sort of curious myself to hear more responses, I love Be Hoppy and find there to be some tasting note that I can't put my finger on, but it makes it seem different in the ipa category. I could be way off base, but I had a pilsner recently, I think it was a JA Post Shift and something reminded me of a familiar taste I get in Be Hoppy. It's funny, I usually don't enjoy so much the first sip, it's off putting to me, and then I really enjoy the beer from there on out.
I'd say Tendril by Proclamation is kind of similar in that they hop it like a west coast, but use a malt/yeast combination that keeps it on the cleaner/juicier side than traditional WCIPAs. My go to for "easy drinking" DIPA similar to Be Hoppy would be Boulevard's The Calling. Seems like I can only get it fresh on draft though, lately all the bottles I see of this are dusty.
Very inconsistent in cans about a year ago so I stopped buying it. When it's on it's one of my favorites, when it's off it's very mediocre and a total waste of money.
Dang, although I did check the Boulevard website and it shows this is still an active beer. Must be due to the aforementioned dusty bottles they pulled back distro of this beer out of our area. That's a bummer, although the Yard House list of DIPAs is large the Calling seemed to hit the spot best when pregaming for Sox games. Freak of Nature is probably the closest flavor profile from their tap list.
And now you need to check the dates on those 4-packs to make sure they’re not too old. Seen 5 month old recently @ stores - no bueno. I’m draft-only on Be Hoppy at this point. Still can be a great beer if the lines are clear & keg is fresh.
