This is great, but where is Cafe Racer 15?

Total Wine randomly carries their cans in WA, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Covid put a stop to this.

And up here where I live (25-30 miles from the brewery) the confusion might have worked the other way. If there had been any confusion to be had.

Lost Coast seems to be struggling, but I wasn't aware that Bear Republic is. While I don't see their stuff as much as I once did in Oregon, it seems to be all over the place still in California. A lot of pubs and restaurants here (am in Napa right now), if they only have one IPA on tap, chances are it will be Racer 5.

Lost Coast seems to be doing fine locally. I don't know how, I've thought they made pretty shit beer for a long time and probably haven't had anything from them in 3 or 4 years since the last time I ate lunch at their cafe.

They have a great big new brewery that they opened up 5 years ago or so and they have a cider brand now. Where are you guys seeing that they are struggling?

I haven't paid nuanced attention, but I will say that its been a bit since I've seen a LCB tap handle. Clearly part of that could be unique to my visitation spots, which are still a bit limited to where I can have open air seating. Do still see plenty of their stuff in the grocery store cooler.

This is pretty much my reaction as well. I used to see 8 ball and great white on tap pretty frequently, but not for some time now. Same with bottle sales. It's pretty rare when I see their beer in grocery stores any more.

Maybe that's just a function of living where I do now, but there was a time when I felt like I used to see their beer pretty much everywhere. Not so much anymore... Not in quite some time now.

^^^ditto. Downtown Brown and Great White used to be common offerings in bars and bottle shops here in SoCal. Now I can't even remember the last time I saw either

I just meant both are not doing as well as a decade ago.

They are both breweries that were too large to be nimble when the flood of competition came online but too small to make the push into national ubiquity.

Although I do think that, financially, Lost Coast probably fared better than Bear Republic. They are in Walmart and the like in the midwest at least and great white is one that often shows up in dive bars as one of the few "craft" options is your don't want coors light or modelo.

Bear Republic seems to be trying to go the opposite direction, seeking to become an option for the beer nerd crowd. I'm really interested to see if they can pull it off. I went looking for examples of breweries that have achieved a soft landing scale back a couple years ago and couldn't really find one. I'm definitely cheering for Bear Republic. I'd love the option to have their hoppy beers (especially hop rod rye) in the rotation of 11-14$ 4 packs
