Visiting the Beaufort area in March. Flying in and out of Savannah. What breweries or beer bars should I check out? Also, any great food in general to know about?
Savannah is a bunch of fun and there are plenty of (fairly recent) strings on things to do there. Perhaps my friend @DeadWalkerAir could offer some specifics on Beaufort.
Here in Sav, Moon River is the only brewpub. We have 10 house beers on, and 12 guest taps. Currently pouring a farmhouse blend, wild saison/ Belgian IPA, an 11.2% "tripel", dry hopped amber with Galaxy and Sorachi, and the usual year round beers. Since you're heading into SC, the Bluffton area now has three breweries, including Salt Marsh, Southern Barrel, and River Dog. The newest, Salt Marsh, is an interesting setup since it's upstairs at Fat Patties burger joint. They also do food at Southern Barrel, and just started serving food at River Dog. I like Peaceful Henrys for cigars and beer, and the Dispensary for food in Bluffton.
I too will be visiting Beaufort this up coming week and am looking for some beercentric places to visit while I'm there. Bars, bottle shops, nice restaurants? Also I went to seekabrew and found this list of breweries distributing to South Carolina that do not distribute to my home state of Pennsylvania. Benford Big Boss Big Wood COAST Brewing Co. Conquest Foothills Frothy Beard Gordon Biersch [Limited] Grand Teton Green Man Highland Lazy Magnolia Lexington (Alltech/Kentucky) Lonerider Natty Greens NoDa Olde Mecklenburg [Limited] Palmetto Pike [Limited] Pyramid Red Brick (formerly Atlanta Brewing) Red Hare River Dog River Rat Seminar Southern Star Sweetwater Westbrook Should I be on the look out for anything from these breweries listed? Or not? Cheers!
I was just there for New Years. For beer, Beaufort is...tough. Bill's Liquors on the other side of the bridge from downtown was the best spot for buying to-go. The best tap list seemed to be the Old Bull Tavern. Other than that, most restaurants have a few decent regional selections. The closest brewery is probably River Dog, which is a good 30 min drive from downtown. My suggestion is just find a restaurant that looks good food-wise, and just enjoy what they have on tap. Oh, and Hunting Island is a MUST. Plan on spending at least half a day there and bring your walking shoes.
