I would not say I am losing it, but I have somewhat lost interest in Craft Beer in general. I was all about it at the beginning of the year, but after sipping some major personal "ticks" and "wales," I feel something lacking.

There are still a few beers out there that pique my interest and I really want to try -- one of which I have a bottle of -- but I find myself with a lack of interest in most things I see, and personally I think it has to do with Homerism.

I can appreciate people wanting to get the highest "trade value" for their beer, but I really do not care if someone stood in line for hours in the rain/sleet/snow/got butthurt for X beer -- that is your problem not mine, I have plenty of delicious beer to sip -- and I think that has lead to it. There have been threads about the ISO:FT forum as of late, but even the "Hauls" thread seems like a bottle swanging competition to me.

Maybe it's the: "BAD TRADER/COUNTERFEIT BOTTLE/NEGATIVE VIBES" threads going around; or maybe I just need to get back to sipping with my Late Night tasting group.

Or maybe I'm just over-thinking it after some delicious beers and some Kopi Luwak and need to get to Advocating and bring some BMC drinkers to the dark side.

    • Don't worry about ticks/whales.
    • Homebrew.
    • Drink at local brewpubs with other people who love beer.
Beer advocacy is not about getting the most sought after beer in the world.

Welcome to the club that enjoys drinking good, and easy to find beer.
Say goodbye to the club that drinks good beer by way of ticking and whale hunting.

There's more than one way to enjoy beer.

Some great advice in the posts above. Don't over-think it like many BAs who seem to like the idea of beer more than they actually like beer.

Don't follow the crowd. That is what I did for most of my life with the BMC crowd. Drink what you like and experiment when you feel the urge. To hell with trends and advertising.

If you need to get back into beer just go 2x $4$ with your locals for something less limited from somewhere else (Parabola works for me) and then do IP trades for worse beer than you originally started with.

Feels good to pay it forward.

Amen. I'm with coreyfmcdonald on that..

Get back to what made you enjoy it. I seek out the new beers, because it's half fun, but I've dropped off and just waited for the good seasonal stuff to show up, and I homebrew in the mean time. I get WAY MORE excited about pulling a pint or a taste of something I made, than I do for popping the cap of something I ran out of work early and drove 30 miles for and could only buy 1 at a ridiculous price.

There's plenty of great beer out there just sitting on the shelf waiting to be enjoyed. What people hype up, and call great, can be a good beer, but you make it what it's worth.

I can only echo coreyfmcdonald's sentiments on that, seriously; just drink good beer around likeminded folks and to Hel with what others may or may not be drinking or if you're not ticking whales or any of that nonsense.

Just got the FG on a RyePA a buddy of mine and I brewed up and got the numbers dead on, and that's a bit more exciting than when Blabaer showed up at the door...

do like me, someone who is new to trying to be a BA...gifts! give good beers that you like as presents to people who aren't as familiar with beer. then have them let you know how they like it (or, better yet, drink it with them). Easy, only as expensive as you want it to be, and who doesn't love gifts?

I know what you mean– I feel it's just cyclical. Trading's just a perk and not a necessarily a necessity. There are tons of good company and good beers out there being disregarded because of the mayhem of the latest release(s). Some people just enjoy the thrill of the chase. Sure it's fun to partake in it once in a while, but nothing to be overly passionate either.

Doesn't hurt to just fall back and enjoy what you already have and know. Here's to you.

Exactly.. How exciting is it to be drinking your non-whale.. while brewing, and you finish up and you calculate it all out in Beersmith and find you hit an easy 80% efficiency, hit all your numbers perfectly, and had a nice clean brew day.

You may have actually entered the world of drinking beer for the sake of the beer. Not advocacy, ticking, obsessing, all of that bullshit. It's what I've been doing for 30 years. When I go to my local, I'd say less than 10% of the discussion is about beer.

Right there with you on this. I take more pleasure in things like cold crashing, adding gelatin, properly carbing, and finally pulling (which I just did a few minutes ago) a crystal clear glass of homebrewed Koelsch than in sipping (and discussing and discussing and discussing) a 2 oz. pour of The Abyss with 8 other dudes.

Visit the closest brewery that you have never been to before. Shoot the shit with the brewers, taste some of their beers, buy a growler. That'll get you there!

if you like the beer, then just do it. I enjoy some beers that some people dislike. Hell I enjoy a Guinness nitro can. Advocacy is really just trying to inform the willing. No use in forcing things. just chill out and drink a beer, man.

Im all about relaxing with friends and a good beer, bottle of Cabernet/bordeaux/Sambuca, or with jager and coke man. I do enjoy the bigger whales as well. but at the end of the day, man, just enjoy yourself.

Drink the beer you like and don't bend over backwards to get it.

Sounds straightforward but I've been in your shoes before and know how you feel. Beer is beer when it comes down to it, just drink what you like. Never thought I'd be big on Narragansett Lager for example but now it's always in my fridge. Cheap, easy to find and refreshes my mind/body/soul. Hate all you want but I like it and in the end that's all that matters right?
