It’s too damn easy to catch a ride via Uber/Lyft/whatever to even have to think about pacing or watching abv on beers. I take these even if I’m just having a few so that I don’t have to think about it or stress over it. Just don’t get the driving drunk thing these days…I grew up in suburbs of STL in late 90’s, everyone drank, saw maybe 2-3 cabs ever, and those were at airport.

I've walked across some sketch areas to get beer... New Orleans (I've been told to not walk past "when the lights cut out"/past the underpass), Baltimore... and you can, too!

This is a pretty long thread now, and I haven't read every post. So my apologies if this (or something similar) has already been posted.

As others have pointed out, the best solution is to not drink and drive. Ever. Period.

That being said, that's easier said than done in a country where many cities don't have reliable mass transportation. Lyft/Uber is an option, but many are put off by the cost and inconvenience. So many choose to take their chances and drink and drive. This post is for those people.

So if you're going to drink and drive, at least be smart about it. If you're planning to go out for a few pops, plan your time out in advance. Limit your time out, do as little driving as possible, and plan in advance your consumption rate. Someone in this thread mentioned having just 3 IPAs, pointing out that many consumers feel that's not so much over the course of an afternoon. Except if you think about it, 3 pints of a 7% IPA is comparable to drinking an entire bottle of wine. Unless you're Andre the Giant, you're almost certainly going be legally drunk after that.

The reality is that most craft beer has considerably higher abv. than your typical AAL. Maybe you'd be fine driving after 3 or 4 glasses of Bud lite, but you will absolutely not be "fine" after drinking 3 or 4 pints of Maine Lunch.

So maybe get in the habit of not ordering pints. Perhaps order half pours or taster size glasses instead (especially if you're drinking high octane beer). Also, decide in advance how long you plan to stay at a taphouse or bar. Longer time out invariably equates with more alcohol consumed. Either plan in advance how much alcohol you intend to consume (and stick to that plan), or decide in advance how long you're going to be out drinking (and stick to that time table).

The rest of my post is aimed at avoiding getting pulled over. This information is based on CLE courses I've taken and time spent clerking with a federal magistrate (listening to hours of arraignment and probable cause testimony).

You may think you're completely fine after a couple of pops, and that you're driving is fine, but that's no guarantee that your not driving drunk. Police officers aren't necessarily even looking for drivers who are obviously intoxicated. I've heard several officers in court mention that statistically, something like one out of three people driving after 11pm are driving impaired. During that time period, officers often look for any sort of minor infraction as probable cause to pull someone over. With those kind of odds, it would be foolish not to. My point being, don't come home late from a bar if you want to lower the risk of getting pulled over.

Other criteria I've heard officers mention as a possible indicator of intoxication (especially if it's late at night): driving with your window open; driving while male; driving solo; driving significantly above or below the posted speed limit, driving with your music turned up loud. But really, probably the smartest thing you can do to avoid being pulled over is not to be out late at night, driving around after you've had a few pops.

Obviously, the smartest thing is not to get into a vehicle after you've had a few belts, no matter what time of the day it is. But if you're going to drink and drive, try not to be out late at night, try not to drive by yourself, limit the amount of driving you do and the time you spend out at a tavern, and plan in advance how much you're going to consume (and stick to your plan!).

    Good luck. Cheers.

Thankfully my wife doesn’t drink so I always have a DD. We always pick places with good food so she can get something too. If I’m not with her it’s always Lyft/Uber or public transportation without fail

I’ve lived a short period of time in New Orleans, I have several friends who have lived in New Orleans. Every single one of them has consistently said they don’t know a single person who’s life hasn’t been impacted in one way or another by violent crime. As previously mentioned I’ve been a victim of violent crime myself, and for doing nothing wrong other than walking in the wrong city at the wrong time of the day. If you want to be a fucking moron and brazenly walk around places with known high rates of violent crimes that’s on your own dumb ass, but don’t promote that it’s a good idea. There may be young people reading this thread, who’s entire life can be changed by taking a post late night bar stroll down the wrong block. Be smart people, don’t be a fucking idiot like that guy, and most importantly be safe. This thread was started, presumably, to promote safety and good decision making, Not drinking and driving isn’t the only smart decision one can make after a late night at the bar.

I understand where you are coming from, and I understand why you are so passionate about the topic, but I was (as I am sure others were) caught a bit off guard by the aggressiveness of your post. Again, I get it. I think there’s a better way to say that.

Also, hopefully people understand (if not here’s fair warning) that every city is different, and you should check in advance where you should go. Also, as most people probably understand, there is a difference between “tourists are recommended to not go further than” and “this isn’t a bad neighborhood, but recognize the city has high crime.

When people go to New Orleans, they are usually told not to leave the French quarter, but (if going by foot) the warehouse district to the west is fine, and crossing rampart to visit music venues to the north, and into treme, is also fine. (Maybe don’t visit LA park at night, but again use common sense.)

Lastly, sorry that you experienced what you did. I get it. But the best way to get your message out isn’t to bludgeon someone with passion, it’s to relay that information dispassionately. In doing so, you can still criticize someone else’s statement if you find it to be ignorant/dangerous.

Agree with the above. When I make the decision to walk I've more than likely driven by the destination first (on way to hotel, etc.), so I know what I'm getting into. If I'm comfortable with it, I walk. There are some places where I've said "HELL NO" tho.

A few downtown areas around here have established “social zones” in the bar districts. Basically a green line spanning a couple blocks signaling you’re okay to be in the street with your beverages. Once the line stops, no alcohol allowed. Cheers.

It's not excuse at all. I agree with you completely, crappy public transportation is no excuse for driving drunk. And yet? It happens all the time. I was slammed with "don't drive drunk" material in schools from K-12. College too. The message never stopped (right on down to public service announcements during Saturday morning cartoons). And my parents slammed with the idea too. My parents made it clear that it would be better just to call them if I had drank too much than to risk driving myself or with someone else who was also intoxicated. And despite all this, I drove over the legal limit more times than I can count when I was in my 20s. I'm not proud of this by any means. I was never so hammered I didn't know what I was doing, those were the nights when I just stayed wherever I was. But I was certainly over .08. No excuses, it was wrong, but it happened despite all the education in the world around it. And I was broke as shit, so it's not like the massive fines for a DWI weren't scary to me. They were. It was all scary to me. But hanging with my friends outweighed the fear of getting busted or having something awful happen. Is that wrong? Probably. Is that reality? Yup. And I'm supremely confident I am not the only one on these boards with a similar story. So yeah, crappy public trans isn't an excuse, but if we want people to stop driving drunk we might want to put more money into upping said public trans than we do into the education around drunk driving. Just my $0.02.

Well said my friend. I definitely agree we need to work more in the way of prevention than in the way of punishment. Cheers.

I do this all the time (I as I said in a previous post).

Yesterday afternoon I walked 3 miles to a brewery, then walked 2.5 to the next bar, and then 2.5 after that back home.

    What about Lyft?

    @AlcahueteJ
A much safer option obviously but not totally safe.
My youngest brother parked his car and decided not to drive because he had a few. He went for a walk and apparently stumbled and was hit by a car (no witnesses but the driver, so we will never know the whole story). He spent almost 2 weeks in intensive care with no brain activity so we as a family had to make the hardest decision...sadly he passed away.

Not as bad, but still a cab company pretending not to be a cab company just to get around the regulations that cab companies are saddled with.
