I remember reading a story about some ancient bear remains found in a cave in either Spain or France. They were crippled by gout, which is a form of arthritis, and I would suspect that a protein rich diet may have contributed. It does have a strong genetic component and smart bears these days eat salads more often and drink lots of water!

I get that periodically as well. I take a couple of Tylenols, drink lots of water, and do my best to suck it up (other meds aren't an option for me), it's the price of admission for the beer and food I like to consume.

Indomethacine and Colchacine are scary to me. Indomethacine is a powerful anti-inflammatory and Colchicine is a serious poison. I have felt the effects of Indomethcine reducing the swelling of gout, and it does provide great relief as it begins to work. These are largely "reactive" drugs for bad episodes. Having been through all of this for years, I urge anyone prone to gout to begin a daily regimen of Allopurinol. It does work.

My rheumatologist thought I had gout when my right back toe joint flared up. Turned out it was an agitated footable injury from high school that came back to haunt me. They did however take a lot of blood samples and check for purine levels. From all the meat and beer I was drinking, my purines were high so he prescribed me Allopurinol. He was also going to prescribe me colchicine, but i've also heard of stories from people that took that medicine.

Drink plenty of water. Cherries and cherry juice help as well. Also, it's been said that coffee can help with gout.

True, you should not use NSAIDS if you are a heavy or moderate drinker. Can cause a myriad of problems.

Something else to consider: high uric acid (generally the root cause of gout) is also linked to increased risk of heart disease, so treating only the symptoms of gout and ignoring diet advice does come with risks other than gout flares.

interesting. gives me something to think about, having never taken allopurinol. my total colchicine consumption for 2014 was 6 tiny (.6 mg I think) tabs. I think I've had that many this year already, might get all the way up to 9 before the year is up. I prefer that to taking something every day but that's just me.

OOPs--meant to quote gordon's post not this one. but both talk about allopurinol which scared me as something to put in my body everyday, more than colchicine only at the time of a flare.

The gout was in my knee. I take it Cochicine is prescription drug. My Dr. did not mention that drug. She prescribed Prednisone because I told her I wanted to get back to work asap. I do not want a drug you have to take everyday. I would rather have something you take when a flare up occurs. I did order tart cherry extract...

My father has gout and his doctor tells him that the occasional beer is OK, but it is worst when paired with A) Seafood & B) Peanuts. Put all 3 together and you're screwed.

Nothing should take away a man's right to enjoy a beer. Nothing. Everything in moderation and know when to indulge and when to take care of yourself.

I had my first episode this year, following a very uncharacteristic night of extreme over-indulgence of high abv beers. I had no idea how painful and outright debilitating gout can be. I got on Allopurinol which has lowered my uric acid within normal levels. I had to take two courses of Prednisone to totally eliminate the symptoms. I was a beer a night most nights with dinner, maybe another 2 beers socially 2x per week and 6 strong ones on Friday drinker. My doctor does not preach abstinence, and suffers from gout himself. I have reduced my weekly intake by 1/2, and reduced the Fridays to 4 strong beers, and increased my hydration. For anyone who has this and is not getting treatment, do yourself a favor and see a physician.

Nope, although I have heard about it through others. Hoping it never happens because it sounds painful as hell.

I started getting gout attacks when I was 21. It took 7 years to finally find a doctor that diagnosed me correctly. Started taking allopurinol every day and haven't had any major flare ups UNTIL TODAY. I shit you not. Got it bad in my knee today. Took 6 ibuprofen's over the course of the day and I'm feeling much better. I drank pretty heavily on Sunday and I think that had a lot to do with it.

    Yes.

Go get a prescription for Allopurinol and continue living your life eating and drinking what you wish.

I tried the vegetarian route and got attacks anyway, Allopurinol is the answer.
