I've recently been really into beers. IPA, stouts, heffes, ales, ect. Really will try anything and generally have a pick your 6 once a week. Will usually have 1-2 at a sitting as I like the flavor and depending on the style it's enough to give me a buzz.

Now I'm also into powerlifting and try to be healthy but the more I read on beer I'm curious to certain studies.

1 will drinking a six pack a week really much in terms of weight gain? I usually always stick to my same caloric needs regardless of weather I'm drinking or not. Performance wise I will say some of my best lifts have been after a night of drinking.

2 I read there's a correlation between beer and man tits. What exactly is the reasoning behind it? Will drinking as little as I do effect that? Or is it more for heavy drinker's?

3 again, I hear there's a correlation between beer and sex drive. Will drinking beer affect sex drive in the long term?

I really do enjoy my beer after work and couple on the weekends.

I would say if you’re into powerlifting and apparently try to eat really healthy, I can’t imagine a 6-pack per week having major physique or sexual repercussions. However, I am not an expert on any of these subjects other than drinking at least a 6 pack per week.

Best first post ever! On the off chance that this isn’t a humorous attempt at trolling, I’ll bite the bullet and answer seriously...

    1. It all depends on your metabolism. For some people, one beer a night could be terrible for their weight gain. I probably average 64 ounces of beer a day and have done so since I was 19. When I was 19, I weighed 140 lbs. Today (27 years old) I weigh 155 and am 5’11”. I also eat on average 8 tacos a day. My only exercise is brewing and walking my dogs for about 30 minutes a day.

    2. Don’t worry about man boobs from beer. Worry about man boobs because of bad metabolism, diet, or exercise.

    3. Sex drive? Not an issue for me until I’ve had 7 or 8 beers, in which case, I just want more tacos and a cigarette.

No offense intended, but this is funny as s--t!!!

    1. Beer is def high calorie, but if you burn those calories then poof, no weight gain i would think. Alcohol does blast up your triglycerides though, so gotta watch out for that.

    2. Please post article showing link between beer and moobs!!! Idnk about a direct link between beer and moobs, but a LOT of beer drinkers I know have them (but there are also a lot that do not, and they do cardio!)

    3. Booze in general has been helping people hook up for millennia, so i would not think there is a link showing beer decreasing sex drive. Long term, i think diet/lack of exercise and diminishing testosterone levels lower sex drive. I would be interested to see some hard (pun intended) science studies on the matter though.

    Interesting question for sure. Cheers!

Not sure if serious but I will also bite the bait.

    1. A sixer a week is fairly reasonable since I am over this ratio. Yes beer and IBU can be a problem, as aptly mentioned before it depend a lot on ones metabolism. That said, is it better to drink a lot of soda? Probably not. I am 5'11'' and 160 lbs by the way, despite what for some is 'drinking heavily'. My transaminases is also fine.

    2. Beer and moobs made me giggle a bit and I have no proof of correlation between both.

    3. At a sixer a week, you are not likely to have a decreased sex drive, on the contrary. Unless you have the sixer in one setting. I found that it even increased my libido, meaning that you don't either take benzos or antidepressants which may cause erectile dysfunction. Or excessive masturbation and many other things.

PS: I replied as seriously as I could, assuming the OP is genuine.

Welcome to the BA site, Mrcsbud2.

We all have different bodies. Long distance runners (or people in top shape) occasionally have a heart attack. If you are concerned about man boobs keep looking into the mirror, and if your chest starts to look sexy, then you have to start to figure what causes them and then do something different. But beer might not be the cause.

    1. The correlation in weight gain is between calories consumed and calories burnt off. Lots of calories consumed more weight gained.

    2. No unique or special effects caused by beer as such. Lots of fatty food however...

    3. The correlation is a general one between amount of alcohol (not just beer) and sex. in men, increased alcohol increases wilingness and desire to perform while it decreases ability to perform.

Maybe there's a connection between hops and moobs, I know hops cousin mary jane bumps up estrogen levels and creates "pot tits".

I've read some forum posts about "theories" that hoppy beers cause man boobs, but I'm not sold until there is some research proof.

If anything I'd chalk it up to natural aging of men over time with beer calories sprinkled in that causes the man boobs.

Would like to see some research done by looking at 21 year old guys before discovering IPAs and same group then 3 years later at 24 years old. Those drinking alot of IPAs (1 a day avg?) over that period and another sample group that abstained from beer/alchohol all together, and a 3rd group that drank beer but rarely IPAs/hoppy beers. See after 3 years of young men if there are any hop to man-boob cooreleations before any aging factors kick in.

There are a lot of factors and it's dangerous to follow the, "I drink five beers a day and I'm fine," crowd because what is their age, activity level, daily caloric intake and types of food, when do they drink said beers? All can have an effect. Also, it's very important to remember that what makes beer/alcohol different from food is that the liver goes after the alcohol first so fat can just sit there and then accumulates. That's the big issue with beer: high in calories, carbs and you also have the alcohol piece to contend with.

Here is a post of mine from another thread so my experience:

I work out regularly, have for decades and have a good diet. I'm in good shape but I was still getting a bit of a beer gut so months ago I cut way back on beer and that helped a bit but didn't do enough for my liking. I decided to stop beer completely for a month and there were immediate results and the stubborn area shrunk quickly. I worked beer back in, keeping it to a minimum, but it didn't take long to see/feel some negative results.

Re: the man boobs, some theories about estrogen in hops but nothing has really been proven. Hops are a sedative, though, so if nothing else they can knock you out.

When I was in my 20s I drank at least 6 beers a night, never got above 180 lbs ( I’m 6’3”), finally in my late 30s I finally cracked 200, and didn’t drink near as much, but I got smarter about weight training and nutrition. Metabolism and hereditary can be ignored

Exercise really balances things out. For me at least. I know I will be in the minority here (small woman, so probably not a great comparison), but I am about ~100-105 pounds have a 16 oz can most days (DIPA), a little more on weekends. My weight hasn't budged in years.

I also lift three times a week and do cardio the other four days.

I've seen and read studies that the beer gut (not boobs) correlates to the diet you have while drinking beer (i.e. snacks/junk) and not to the beer itself.

It's a good but muddy theory, as beer is empty calories any way you slice it. But yes the body can crave fatty foods while drinking and with decreased inhibitions you do need to be careful.

I read something recently that really hit home with me: would you eat one or two king sized candy bars in a sitting? Calorie wise you can be doing just that with beer.
