Is beer preference dependent on politics?

As many of you know, Blue Moon was recently crowned as the new most popular beer in the US (as of the end of last year) - http://www.businessinsider.com/map-...ce=slate&utm_medium=referral&utm_term=partner and http://www.theatlantic.com/business...moon-really-be-americas-favorite-beer/280632/

In another article reporting on this occurrence - http://www.bizjournals.com/stlouis/news/2013/10/21/americas-king-of-beers-isnt-bud.html - the author writes "beer preference is dependent on politics. Republicans chose Bud Light, Democrats chose Blue Moon and Libertarians chose Sam Adams."

Without asking anyone to discuss their political preferences if they don't want to - would you agree or disagree with the statement, either specifically or generally?

So disagree with this. You will find craft beer drinkers from all walks of life. That's what makes the common love of good beer so special; there is no predetermined "beer culture".

Ridiculous article. Oh and don't blame me because Kang is doing such a shitty job. I voted for Kodos.

Yes they will find some trends in the larger population that certian groups tend to drink X beer a certain amount of the time, but when it comes to us as a sub-culture I'd say polictics are more varied. There is most likely a confound or two(that is not beer or politics) driving the relationship they found. Also depending upon how they collected the info reults may vary.

Edit: Another exlanation would be location, age, eduction, ethnicity, SES, and parent preference for the connection if any.

In college my friends and I had a rule; no talking death, politics, or school work while at the bar/drinking.

The only time we broke it was doing senior design at Harry's

This seems to support the point from the other thread about why beer journalism is so bad.

You gotta be kidding me. And I suppose hamburger or hotdog is dependent on political preference to? Maybe boxers or briefs?

To state that beer "preference is dependent upon politics" is like saying the type of yogurt you prefer is dependent upon your sign in astrology.

I am a registered Republican with some Libertarian leanings and some Democratic tendencies and I drink craft beer. I don't know where I fit in the poll . . . OTHER.

I am a Republican with Libertarian leanings and I drink craft over BMC whenever possible. There is no reason to drink swill, regardless of you political orientation.

I'm fairly liberal (left center or so) and a good friend of mine is pretty conservative, registered Republican (directly at the Right fielder (not down the line to the Tea Party, thank goodness.)
We have pretty similar tastes in beer.

Democratic Socialist/Populist (if I have to label) in one of the reddest states (if not THEE reddest state) in the Country who has been known to crack open a few good/rare ales with gun-toting fellows who drive V-8's and think Obama is actually left of center. The funny thing is that politics or religion are the absolute last things on anybody's mind when doing so.

Double-Like on that comment. I prefer to enjoy beer with fellow-beer lovers and keep the discussion on ANYTHING other than politics:wink:

Generally agree - but I thought the post was okay because it was a meta-conversation about beer and politics - as in "do you think political preferences correlate to beer preference?"

Plus, the throwaway comment at the end of the article was so interesting to me, that i had to remark and share it with my fellow BAs

    Hmmmm.........let me guess.

Blue Moon drinking skews towards women. Women skew towards being democrats, throwing the statistic off.

Bud Light is one of the beverages of choice for men, and without the skewing female demographic with their Blue Moon, Bud Light stays the choice of Republicans. I'm sure if you look at male Democrats it would be similar.

Libertarians just have better taste :stuck_out_tongue:

I dont don't believe the politics influence the beer, It's more like the beer influences the politics.
