i am visiting a friend the weekend of 4-17 in Milford and was wondering if anyone has ideas of breweries/bottle shops worth going to? I know kuhnhenn seems close by.
Kuhnhenns is NOT close by to Milford as it's about 35min away or so. There's a stellar beer bar called Palate in downtown Milford and a great brewery close by called Witch's Hat. If you do go towards Kuhnhenns, stop by Holiday Market in Royal Oak on the way for a killer bottle selection and prices and Schramms in Ferndale for the best mead you'll ever taste.
If you've got the time Kuhnhenn is certainly worth the trip, but if you're in Milford proper you've got a solid 45 minute drive to get there. Not sure about bottle shops, but for drafts Palate in downtown Milford is worth checking out. The food is great and the tap list always has something interesting on it. I've also heard good things about Smoke Street BBQ directly across the street.
Rivers Edge is in Milford and both Palate and Smoke House have great food and tap lists. For bottles, try Pine Ridge or Colsantes (sp?) up the road in Highland. Witch's Hat is in South Lyon, not terribly far away. Kuhnhenn and the Ann Arbor places are about 45 minutes away in opposite directions.
Boom, two simultaneous votes for Palate. Just checked, they have Blushing Monk on right now. Not that it'll make it to 4/17, but it helps make the case on beer selection there.
If you want to drive to Kuhnhenn, then you could be in a lot of places and I would just google metro-detroit breweries. If you want the closest brew pubs, it's River's Edge in Milford and Witch's Hat just to the south (20 min?). There's a brew pub in Brighton (Becker - 25 min west) and 2 in Howell (Eternity, Block - 30 min west). All of these brew pubs are small scale and don't bottle (except Witch's Hat for special occasions and VERY limited) Bottle shops in Milford would be Colasantes north of town and Holden's south of town. Neither are stellar with large quantity though, but worth a stop as they have hidden gems every now and then. Palate has a good tap list as pointed out. And smoke street is good for BBQ and a beer.
Palate Smoke Street BBQ (across from Palate) River's Edge Brewery (down the road from Palate) Pine Ridge Market (great bottleshop just a few minutes away from Palate). Witch's Hat Brewery in South Lyon
Good list. The BBQ is disappointing, but my benchmark is TX , and just got back again from a trip. Rivers Edge keeps improving, like that place. Palate is my local. Witch's Hat is 20+ minutes away.
Another rec for River's Edge, and Eternity Brewing in Howell (~20 min. away). Skip Brewery Becker in Brighton and Block Brewing in Howell.
Another vote for The Palate and River's Edge Brewing, both in Milford. If you head down the road into Highland you can stop onto Pineridge Market, nice selection of craft beer. Head East down 59 a few miles and you can checkout The Root Restaurant and Bar, good food and nice craft beer options. Famous Market is another store with a decent bottle selection in White Lake. Make sure you try something from Shorts Brewery. Make the trip to Witches Hat and especially Kuhnhens if you find the time.
Food and beer recommendations should include the Laundry in Fenton and the Firehall also in Fenton. Both are about 30 minutes to the north. Edit - there is a new place near Palate that is getting good reviews from friends, Village Bar and Kitchen. Haven't been - anyone else been?
Palate and Witch's Hat are a must...Rivers edge should be hit up as well since your in Milford....Id personally stay away from smoke street as im not a fan of the food...
Agreed with most on here except I like Smoke Street's food. I'm sure it isn't as good as Texas BBQ but I think it is as good as Union Woodshop (let the beatings commence).
Well, as I often say, the best brisket in MI is average TX brisket at best. Woodshop was OK to not so good the 2 times I was there, so we agree. MI has TX beat on the beer in a BBQ place (Shiner Bock is often the best offered), and the sides are much better and varied, beyond the usual coleslaw, pinto beans, potato salad in TX. For anyone that has not had Brisket around Austin and Lockhart TX, you don't know what you are measuring against. Franklin BBQ is the best I have ever had by a long way.
It would be a miss to visit Milford and not have a beer or two at River's Edge. For a newer brewery, they are very good. I always find several good choices there. Try the Brown or the Porter or the Belgian Pale...
