Yeah, by then Coors was pretty much "national" and rolling in the dough.

Coors Light was already outselling Coors Beer but they were without a "popular-priced" beer (like Busch, Miller's Meister Brau & Milwaukee's Best and Stroh's Old MiIlwaukee). Keystone brand was probably their biggest ad campaign up to that point. In some articles they claimed that they told their distributors they committed "more than the $11 or $12 million" Stroh's was spending to make OM the #1 popular-priced brand (#7 overall).

Coors was about to move into the #3 spot after announcing and then deciding against a merger with #3 Stroh Brewery (which would have given them a bunch of popular-priced brands like Schlitz, Schaefer, Piels along with Old Milwaukee). They did wind up buying Stroh's Memphis brewery, and used it for Keystone and other beers (but not the "brewed with Rocky Mt. water" Coors flagship brands).

Yeah, I know what you mean. Most of the times I "correct" people's memories in these threads it's me initially not believing their dating. "What? That just happened!" and then I do the math..."Damn, 35 years..."

It's especially annoying (for me) when they say something like "My grandpa drank that beer!" and I think, "What, no way. How could that be? It's only came out in ___, that would make his "Grandpa" younger than me." Do the math. "Oh, yeah, his grandfather was born when I was in high school..."

(And that Keystone "Bitter Beer face" ad campaign, that came even later - mid-90s. :grimacing:)

It’s funny how quickly things change. As a kid, I was only aware of Schlitz due to their malt liquor bull commercials, I had no idea they made a “regular” beer and were once one of the largest American breweries.

Also,I figured the big 3 had always been Bud Miller Coors, I didn’t know that Coors was once a regional beer. I had seen Smokey & the Bandit, but my 10 year old brain must’ve missed the whole part about smuggling beer, which is probably for the best because it would have just added to my confusion.

Is there a way to leave out Zima other than purposefully? It's for best, for everybody.

I honestly wonder, if people who are older tend to drink beers that they recognize and have drank since their youth, compared to drinking the newer beers that are just coming onto the market. For me I am 30, and I find myself drinking all types of brands just to see what I like and dont like, Its weird because I really dont like drinking bud or even miller, just doesnt appeal to me.

You're following the steps that all of us have probably used, and are still using in various levels of trying many different beers. (Ticking is what it's called.)

I think that we oldsters were all drinking macro beers prior to 1990-ish but switched to craft beers when we discovered that a variety of better flavors were available in craft beer styles as well as imports. Some of us continue to drink macro beers when in the mood or the beer budget is tight. I have read many comments in these forums that BAers who I suspect are young are also choosing macros occasionally without it being for budget reasons. They are a great summertime thirst quencher.

As for me, I drink a macro only when it's the only thing available But if wine or spirits are available alongside macros, I'll invariably go for one of those two alternatives.

Wow, I would have sworn those ads ran concurrent with when I was drinking it, but I was fully on to the bigger and better things by the mid 90s. On the plus side, I guess our assessment of the beer's tastelessness was honestly arrived at and not tainted by that ad campaign

And yes, these sorts of accidental reminders of age get less fun every year don't they?

Well, as I've noted ad nauseam over the years that's not true for everyone over 30 around here. 45 years ago, my vehicle wore these bumper stickers.

Yeah, me, too. But at least you remembered the earlier Keystone ad campaign "touting of their specially lined cans" (which I had totally forgotten until I looked it up previously a few years back) which resulted in:

I had also forgotten about that ad, which seemed really dumb at the time but is even dumber now after the can craze has pushed a lot of bottles off the shelves. I still hear guys saying that bottles are better because cans taste like metal.

Oops. Wrong Keystone ad image above - it's missing the text, which read:

Well Zika wasn’t really a beer trend from that time, more like an evolution/trend in the wine cooler or Boone’s Farm arena.

I believe Hamm`s brewery made it.

Only on the market for about 2 years.

Yeah, one of many pre-craft era brewers' flavored beers. Right Time came in 4 different flavors (if you count "Red" and "Gold" as flavors).
