I had the very same problem as the Op and resolved it by having a small, beer-themed casual dinner party. I'd say about 20 attendees, +/- . I offered simple, home-made 'bar food', easy to prepare and not expensive. Since most of my guests were new to craft the beers made for great convesation as we raided the beer fridge and thinned the inventory. I kept a few selections out of the way- the prized ones, other than that, we had at it and it was a great time.

Not to threadjack but, since I'm not a beer trader I wonder; if you 'take a break' from trading for a few months are people more hesitant to trade with you when you start back up?

Just wondering if that's a factor in people having trouble slowing down.

I don't think so. I've been a very sporadic trader but it's never been an issue.

Most traders don't care, as long as you've got the beer they want.

Drink Beer for breakfast, that should help.

I was in the same boat about a year ago. When I built new shelving in the basement, 4 levels of 16' long shelves, I decided to count the beers I was putting on them. I realized quickly that I was over 600 beers in the hole (I stopped counting at some point around there).

First I gave away 100 of the beers to the first person that replied to a thread I posted.

Then I decided to drink and review one beer a day. I wanted to avoid huge amounts of excess calories and also damaging my body via excessive drinking. So far I have kept with it, I average about 1 a day, currently around 330 new reviews in 11 months. I started with anything pale or low ABV, slowly moving up the chain. Sometimes I review more than one a day but it's usually because I drained poured something - I usually drain pour if a beer isn't very good. Waste of calories.

In the meantime, I still trade too, but I usually trade for cellarable stuff. I also like to trade my higher quantities for their lower quantities. I also tend to throw in extras that are beers I have duplicates of. That helps somewhat. I also became very picky about what I buy in the store, mostly cellarable stuff again. There are some hoppy things that I still buy (maine lunch, nugget nectar, etc) but will only buy one and drink it ASAP.

So far I'm making progress, I will have to re-evaluate how many beers I have left in the queue this weekend. I am hoping it is 300-400, meaning it will just be another year before I catch up - and what is left is mostly higher ABV stuff like imperial porters, stouts, barleywines, quads, tripels, old ales, etc.. About 50-100 of that number is beers that I am specifically aging.

Funny thing is, via my beer moderation method, diet control and exercise I have managed to lose 60lbs in those 11 months too. At the two year mark I would like to have lost around 100lbs and reviewed 730 beers.

    Good luck!

That's a lot of beer, I think I'd be divorced if I had 600 beers laying around.

Meh, it's all organized nicely on some shelves, alongside my massive car part and tool collection in the unfinished basement. So it's not like it intrudes into my wife's area - just the beers I keep "on deck" in the fridge, which is like one half of a shelf.

Funny, I am running into the same exact situation even down to only having 1 friend that's into craft beer. I have a few I'm working on though... Ha ha! Anyway, I did a bottle count last Friday, and I'm up to about 137 12oz'ers and then 5, but now 4 bombers.
I thought I would get a little dent in the the stockpile over Easter weekend, but then my friend brought over a 4pk of Plead the 5th as a gift, along with a bunch of other stuff, and we drank a lot of them, but still, with his additions, I barely dented my stock...
I know I need to stop buying new stuff, but it's just so much fun! I love the joy of the hunt around stores and getting some great buys. I'm down to the point of mostly trying to keep drinking the IPA's because the Stouts age better anyway. I don't know, I'm trying to stop buying for a while at least and keep it to only special seasonals that show up in my area. I'll wait till my stock is depleted a little before I start hunting again... I hate it though. :slight_frown:

This also is my EXACT same situation. I almost say the same phrase word for word... "It's kinda like we're connected" All state commercial??? :stuck_out_tongue:
To me it's the joy of the hunt!

i m not over loaded like some of you, but my small fridge is. I decided to stop buying every release and deciding if i really have to buy the beer now, or if it will be there at a later time. Of course it works for me cuz where i live, people dont buy up good beer here quickly. So if i dont got the funds at the time i dont sweat it. In fact time to drink down some of this beer. Cheers and good luck man

If I could only trade out my 'conspicuous consumption' of beer, for solely 'consumption' of beer for a few months, I'd have my stock down to appropriate levels.

Even the empties for plinking are backlogged, I went out Easter morning and shot 4 cases of bottles, and still have over a dozen cases of empty bottles backlogged.

Ah well, the weather is getting warmer, no more skiing = more shooting opportunities. But then again, I don't drink while skiing (too dangerous). Can't say the same for plinking.

I may have had a breakthrough today, I went it Total Wine at lunch today, walked around for ten minutes and didn't buy anything, never been in that store before without buying something. I was proud of myself.

I've also decided to streamline what I do decide to buy for a while.

    1. Only beers that can last a decent amount time without "falling off" so basically cellarable stuff.
    2. Only beers that score a 90 or above here.

I will be picking up my first two bottles of Clown Shoes Vampire Slayer today, but it meets both criteria so I'm good.

So that coupled with drinking all my IPA/DIPAs first I think this crisis will come to an end.

It's not a bad plan to slow down buying but I'd be hesitant to limit myself based on review scores. you never know when you'll find an unknown gem or you may end up loving a beer that has divisive reviews. Good luck with your quest though, I'm also (always) trying to cut down on beer spending.

True, I'd never have come to love Gubna, Voodoo Maple Doughnut, Cornballer, Wyld Stallyns etc. . . if I only judged a beer by its score.

It's certainly not a perfect system, but I have to go by something. I am sure I will miss some hidden gems but I have to narrow my selection pool somehow.

i dont have this problem with hoppy beers, but the amount of larger beers (stouts, barleywines, old ales, sours) i've yet to drink is pretty crazy. i set up an "on deck" shelf in my apartment thinking that would help me organize - if i want a beer, just take one from that shelf and open it.

the result? not only has that shelf not diminished, there's about 2 cases worth of bombers sitting on it, along with other bottles on the kitchen counter bc there's no more room. i definitely don't buy as much as i used to, but paring down the stash has been slow going at best.

Due to my tax refund, I now have a beer backlog that I am slowly working through.
