Today I made my first batch of homemade baked beans. In the future I think I want to add beer in place of some of the water. Here is the baked bean recipe from Real Simple magazine. I was thinking a stout with a molasses or coffee flavor might work. Thoughts?

Yes. Or even some sort of sweet malty fruity belgian thing. (A belgian strong pale or a dubbel perhaps?)

I'd stay away frm anything too bitter or too roasted in flavor as that characteristic will get concentrated and pronounced. I'd think that it might be interesting to cut the molasses back in the recipe to 1/4 cup and to use 2-3 cups of something malty, gooey and sweet like a Weizenbock or Doppelbock. Honestly though I think that adding even a simple light lager might make it more interesting.

Try a maple beer - I adore maple-baked beans with a little smokey bacon added.

I've never tried a beer in baked beans. It doesn't sound like a bad idea, however, I would say that maybe a stout or a dubbel might be decent in them. Hmmmm . . . maybe I ought to try one of these myself.

I'm going to try to regular recipe this weekend... If I like it, I'll try it again with a Scotch Ale and report back..
