At Hershey with the family today and we're staying a lot closer to Harrisburg. Wondering if there's anything worthwhile in the area. Will get out of the park too late to go to troegs. Just looking for 1 or 2 solid beers on tap that maybe I can't get in jersey.

Ummm.... Al's of Hampden is an obvious choice. It's located a bit West of Harrisburg, but is easy to get to and their bottle and draft selection is very good.

    Downtown HBG has McGrath's, Arooga's and Anthony's.

Edit: Right across the river is Brewhouse Grille. Anthony's is over off of Rt 81.

Thats a shame b/c Troegs is pretty awesome. You should try Al's of Hampden in Carlisle.

Chose amoogas. Two hearted on tap was pretty much all I wanted. But black note as a bonus. Didn't check Anthony's but I'm sure there's 1 or 2 nice things. Heading back to the park in the morning for chocolate world and to pick up a lost bag so troegs might still happen. Thinking of getting a growler of black note on my way out of here. Definitely makes a trip cooped up with my family worth it.

hot bartender at aroogas too. doesn't drink any beer but she hung around for a few minutes and asked me some questions. they put the kaibosh on the black note growler but she estimated it would be OVER $20 for a growler and was amazed how expensive it would have beeen. damn i love the sticks.

Al's of Hampden is awesome, but it's not really close to Carlisle. It's in Enola, and the closest 'big' town on this side of the river would be Camp Hill.

Too the rest of the locals - When did Arooga's become such a destiantion? Is it all locations?

We've been working closely with the kind folks at the Arooga's chain of restaurants as they have expressed great interest in implementing more and more craft beers into most of their locations throughout the mid-state. Over the past few months, one could find beers like Ballast Point Sculpin, Cigar City Jai Alai, Stone Ruination, Bell's Black Note, and Dogfish Head 120 on tap to name a few at various locations. You will start to notice additional events featuring craft breweries and rare firkins at their draft-house location in downtown Harrisburg (corner of 2nd and Locust) in the coming months.

I was at the York location yesterday after work and it had a really nice selection. Duclaw, Spring House, 3 Dogfish...probably 20 micro taps in all. Downtown HBG has a zillion taps, and Camp Hill has added a row of micro taps. Carlisle Pike has probably the weakest selection, but they still have Perpetual IPA and a Victory on.

Long story short: Arooga's is a safe craft beer destination.

Edit: George said it way better than I could.

I'd argue 39 is a little weaker (as my local), but it's usually less crowded than the rest...whatever, it's all good. 22 was awesome when I was there a couple months ago, stunned the hell out of md.

I moved to the area about two years ago and wasn't impressed by Arooga's on my first several trips... Sounds like it may be time to do some first hand investigation myself...

I live very close to several Aroogas. The food is not so great and while they may have upgraded their beer selection to mainly craft, I still don't see myself going there often. IMO there are much better places to go in the Harrisburg area!

Tom Gallagher, once of KClinger's Public House, is at the downtown HBurg location. I would imagine that, allowed some latitude, you will see an upgrade in the beer selection there. Agree with pumpkin1 about Aroogas appeal overall. Have noticed that York location's price point is generally highest in the York area.

Mc Grath's also a solid choice as mentioned and the others noted also good choices. Appalachian Brewing has 18 beers on tap and on the 2nd floor the Belgian Bar with 100 various bottles

While I agree that there are "better places" in the area, what is good about Arooga's is that it bridges a gap between the beer crowd and the non-beer crowd. The food is decent and they have every sporting event on Earth available. Certainly beats having to settle on an Applebee's or whatever (Buffalo Wild Wings is coming...ugh) to appease the family or friends.

Relax, watch a ballgame. Bonus: Decent beer.

Seriously, Arooga's? The Hanover location is literally one of the worst bars I have ever been to. The only thing worse than the service was the food. That one only had Troegs and Boston Lager on tap, too.

The Arooga's in Hanover has Spring House, Troegs, Rogue, and Dogfish Head taps now.
