You're kind of right. The caskmates is waaaaaaaaaay brighter and softer. It's nice.

My response is similar to many here. I'm not a bourbon guy at all, but was intrigued by the process, and wondering if the stout notes come through at all. Got a bottle in the Christmas packaging (came with a small bourbon snifter) for ~$35 I think.

Like others have said, no beer taste in there at all. I'm nowhere near qualified to opine on how good it is as a bourbon, or whether the beer barrel aging does anything interesting from a bourbon standpoint.

If nothing else, it is a good conversation piece on my bar. People love to try it. I've spent $35 more foolishly many times, so worth the experiment.

New Holland also does an orange liqueur at like 70 proof. It is more of an orange-infused style than the cloying sweet adjunct stuff like Triple Sec. Also worth trying.

Yeah, I recommend you check it out. Saugatuck, to me, is just a constant let down. Their beer is okay, but nothing is like WHOA. The tour was mediocre, with decent sized samples and because of that people were there to get drunk.

Do the new Holland tour, go downtown afterward for lunch at the pub (good chicken pesto pizza) and then go a couple doors down to Our Brewing. I really enjoyed that vibe.

My issue with NH was I asked the waitress if they had anything else on tap, as it was pretty much just things I could buy at the store, and this is the freaking brewery (I did not say it like that)... She says no. I am like, "really? wow". So I ordered the one thing I hadn't had that was at least newer. All out. Are you kidding me... So I ordered (i think) the Hatter Rye. After we were done I was walking back through the pub and up on the board they had like 4 pub specific specialty beers, that they for some reason didn't want to tell me about, even when I repeatedly asked them if they had anything else. So I ended up going down the street to Our and getting a different beer. Just was disappointed, and it was a special trip my wife and just put me in a bum mood. I know "it's just beer" but I was all excited and then completely let down.

Clockwork Orange. Decent but i don't know what I would normally do with it. It was nice to taste their entire lineup. Along with things like Zepplin Bend, which I would never buy because of the price.

Charbay has done this with bear republic's racer 5 and one of their stouts (forgot the name). I have to say the stout offering is unreal, an amazing whiskey that you can absolutely taste the stout in the finish. I'm a believer of this gimmick.

I bought this bourbon once or twice before I moved out of Chicago last summer. You could get it from Trader Joe's for ~$30/bottle. It's fairly smooth and on the sweeter side, but I'd be hard pressed to say that I could detect any Dragon's Milk character in it.

Yup. Trader Joe's even has their own brand of liquor. I bought a bottle of their Rum of the Gods one time. It's awful.

Finally found some of the New Holland Bourbon in the wild. I'm a sucker for a good gimmick, but this was actually a worthwhile purchase. I don't know about the others who've tried it but I found it a pretty decent bourbon - well priced for a gimmicky liquor - and the Dragons Milk flavors are faint but undeniable. There's a sweeter, maltier flavor than most bourbon has, and some chocolatey, creamy notes in the finish. Wouldn't buy again, but glad to buy once. And it definitely put me in the mood to dig some Dragon's Milk out of the cellar.

They do use some one else bourbon or at least they did. I almost bought a bottle until I found that out. I love New Holland but thought the marketing on that one was a little misleading

Most likely it will have already been aged elsewhere to make it bourbon and then DM would be the beer barrels Short's uses to finish it off. Which might then also be giving them Bourbon barrels to use again in aging beers.

Then you'll want to take care with the other Bourbon brands you do buy since some of them don't even bother to tell us that their product is actually distilled by someone else before further aging to finish it off. At least New Holland indicate (currently at least) that their Bourbon is sourced from someone else.

It does say "Distilled and bottled by New Holland" on the bottle. Not sure if there's some wording loophole they're using for that claim, but I interpret it to mean that they distil it themselves.

"Produced by" or "Produced and bottled by" are the buzzwords for sourced Bourbon. "Distilled by" means they made it. Unfortunately there are some shady characters who will mix one barrel of their own make with 20 barrels of sourced and put "distilled by" on the label because they did actually make a fraction of it.

I'm not a huge fan of Irish Whiskey, but you can definitely pick up the stout on the Caskmates. and I'm glad I picked up a bottle. It lends a smooth softness to the finish and is unlike anything I've taste. I've seen the New Holland bourbon around and though I love Dragons Milk and most of the variants, it strikes me as more of a gimmick.

Isn't all bourbon made in Kentucky? So is this made in Michigan?
