Happy birthday to the beer can, 80 years old today, and thanks to the state in which it was invented, Virginia.

Richmond, Virginia was Newark, NJ brewery Krueger's test market for the first commercially sold beer in cans in US - not where they were "invented". The American Can Company developed the can - not sure where their labs were located.

The cans also hit the shelves in 1935, but development had been going for years, before and even during Prohibition. The biggest difficulty was developing the liner.

Have cans improved in recent years? Do they no longer leave a metallic taste in the beer? I am curious to know because I have not had beer out of a can in years.
