if you're going to Portland - Allagash has one of the best brewery tours I've been on, as well as a nice sampling experience (for free, no less). I agree w. others that a trip up to Oxbow is definitely in order, as well.

having visited Portland & VT both this summer, I recommend VT over Portland any day of the week - as long as it's not winter.

if you can be convinced to extend the weekend, however, head west. We did Russian River, Lagunitas, Bear Republic earlier this summer & everything about that trip was awesome. plenty to do in Sonoma County - with great beer in hand. Hiking in Armstrong Woods w. Supplication remains a pretty kick-ass memory.

Enjoy your anniversary & your weekend.

Yea the wife says all the breweries look alike anyway to HER, just vary due to size. Not to mention any non pub tasting room, are all about the same to HER. We travel for the food/sights/people first. Now for me beer and food go hand in hand. Many states have great tex-mex. seafood and the like, but I think California got them all beat in the different types of those you can experience (if you can afford it, or save up). Not to mention the views, I place Oregon right up there and its a hard choice. Calif wins because it can be warm there in Dec. also great wine, which we also love. great Pinot Noir in RR valley area and Sonoma.

My wife is sweet enough to humor me at breweries, but its not her thing.:grinning:

Give her cheese and guacamole, Dungeness crab and beer/wine and pacific ocean view and she is in Heaven.
