I usually feel like a well versed craft beer guy. You know, always drinking a quality beer, good collection aging in the cellar. But sometimes I see what people here post in "what are you drinking now" and I think "Wow, I've never even heard of some of these!" It's like showing up with the local prom queen thinking you'll have the best looking date there and everybody else shows up with an international supermodel! Anybody else feel humbled by these posts?

The beer, sure, but I must admit I really covet a lot of the glassware.

Not humbled, but envious. These beers look so good, many of which I didn't know existed. Makes you want to get them.

Perhaps I'm a victim of my own hubrus. Around my friends I'm "the beer guy". And I have been in to the scene for a few years. But there are beers I've only read about and these guys are like "thought I'd open one of these tonight". Where the hell do these guys shop? I'm 20 minutes from Capone's, a place with 600 different beers and rated one of the top 10 places in the US to get a beer and they can't get this stuff for me at any price! Damn it, I'm just jealous!

I seek out this beer and try and find it. Challenges are amazing. But the better question is does rare dirt really taste better than common dirt? Dirt is still dirt even if it is rare!. Some of the hyped up beers are nowhere close to as good as the more easily accessible ones.

I thought that also until I realized everyone has a "local" selection that only a few people even have access to. I'm drinking a Foolproof IPA and have Grey Sail and a Bucket growler in the fridge. I bet you have a few that I can't get.

Yes, dirt is dirt. But I can't tell the coal from the diamonds unless I can sample for myself.

What you need is a guy or gal to trade that starts with the line, HI, I'm from Michigan ( or Vermont, or etc.). That would wipe some of that green off your pallor.

I used to feel that way, but then I realized a lot of what people post pictures of are beers not distributed to my state. So naturally you start to think the grass is greener on their side, but then you realize it's just different and they may feel the same way about what you drink.

The only time I am sometimes humbled is when I read threads about what people are bringing to, for example, the post Hill Farmstead Anniversary bottle share... and a part of me thinks I could never go and take part in that because I probably have nothing in the cellar that can mirror what others are bringing. My cellar generally consists of more common beers that happen to age well... Stone IRS, Bigfoot, KBS, shelf Belgians, etc....Westy being the most rare, but I get the sense many people who are involved in the trading community have had Westy. I don't get into trading, so something like Westy is more rare to someone like me.

I have just begun trading. The highlights of my cellar are KBS, a couple 50/50 eclipse Elijah Craig and some '11 Rochefort 10. While I find these nice, they seem like dogfood to most of the traders. Go look at the ISO: FT: forum. I've got nothing most of these people want. And all I'm looking for is other regions' everyday stuff.

There are 88,000 beers on this site. Every guy here is a novice...period! no worries. The elitist cant even argue that unless they have 88,000 reviews lol!

The best beers are usually the ones that are easy to obtain on shelves. The mind is powerful..

You will never be able to acquire every rare, limited, brewery release beer (or every "regular" beer for that matter).
As long as this "beer envy" simply motivates you to try as much new stuff as possible, that's great. Just don't let it stress you out about tracking down every limited release beer out there. For every brewery-only release that lives up to hype or expectations, there are 10 that will just make you say "meh, I can't believe I spent so much time and energy tracking this down."

Whatever you do, don't let your beer hobby stress you out. This is supposed to be how you have fun and blow off some steam, not another unimportant thing in life to worry and fret over.

Keep in mind a large amount of the " whale" beers are not even rated 100. Its all subjective, my whales were Hanaphu, Black Tuesday and Dark Lord. I have since got all three so now I seek Church Hills Finest Hour. Early on Pliny was whale for me, then Heady and Abrasive. It's fun seeking out " YOUR WHALES"

I do remember my first Sculpin. I just couldn't figure out how this was so highly rated. Maybe one day I'll get a Zombie Dust and go "It's okay I guess". I just want the opportunity to make that determination for myself.

I'm not even remotely envious of other peoples' beer and I don't even have a cellar.

I'm jealous every day on this site.. The walez brah (of course)... But lately I'm just jealous of the people drinking Jack's Abby stuff and Heady... I'm jealous of people drinking Pseudo Sue and Double Galactic Daisy Cutter and all these citra or galaxy hopped ipas too, and I haven't even had them, so they might not even be all that! The "what if" just makes me crazy and envious haha.
