Colorado and Bend, OR are on the short list for sure. Haven't been to Bend yet.

The type of beer drinker I have difficulty relating to is the one that can only ‘enjoy’ the best beer of a given style. If they drink some other beer of that style all that they can say is something like: such n’ such beer is better than this beer.

Why does a beer have to be the best in order for the beer to be enjoyed?

I often drink beers that might be rated 15 or 20 or even 40 on BA for a given beer style and I enjoy drinking it. It is the not the best of its style but it is a tasty beer nonetheless!

    Cheers!

Only thing that I can think of is seeing ISO: Beer A, and then the same guy two weeks later FT: Beer A...it appears that they are just trading to trade up to some ultimate goal without stopping to smell the roses.

I could be totally off though.

I have no shame admitting how much fun it is to bust open a trade box, hit up famous breweries and bars while on vacation, or take part in some big tasting event where tons of cool/rare beers come out.

It's also often just as much fun to sit with my friends on the deck of our local watering hole on a hot sunny day and drink Sierra Nevada Kellerweis until the sun sets, then head back to someone's pad to crush homebrews and smoke cigars.

I agree. Some people sap all the fun out of beer by bitching all the time about prices and infections. I enjoy a good beer and occasionally I am really impressed by a beer or a bar but if you are looking for perfection you will be disappointed far more often than if you enjoy them all one sip at a time for what they are.

Some people like to got to the beach, and some people like to go to the brewery.

I have had the perfect beer – 3F Lente.

Otherwise, isn’t everyone on BA kind of an extremist? Some people do take it way too far.

I'll take a beer extremist over a political or religious extremist any day.

I would be a bit sad if I ever found the perfect beer.

    Because... then what?

    Suicide.

In all seriousness though, I've reached a point in my beer career where I can't even be arsed to review a beer most of the time, even if I like it. And aside from a few seasonal favorites I almost never buy the same beer more than once because there's just an absurd amount of variety and I feel like I might be missing something. Not so much a quest for perfection as it is a mild paranoia that I'm missing out. And not even on the limited release stuff; I bought a variety 12 pack of Uinta beers today just because I've heard the name and can't recall trying even the most basic brew of theirs.

So on the one hand, it's good to be comfortable with what you know. On the other hand, what if you're missing out on Flagship Phenomenal Brew X by Small Brewery Nobody Outside of Spittleville Has Ever Heard Of.

    Do you mean this one:
    http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/2216/68548

... "This beer is retired; no longer brewed."

    - Dagnabbit! Now what are we gonna do? I give up.

"Yeah, I really recommend this beer. It's great!"
    "What is it on BeerAdvocate?"
    "Um... 94?"
    "Just a 94... Hmm...."

I'm glad you mention this because I find it a pet peeve of mine as well. No big though, I just do not consider these people beer lovers, just beer "haters." Or whatever you want to call it.

Everytime we have some trip or vacation planned, I just like to check what might be in town. Even with kids, I find that we have some chance to weave some sort of drink into the mix during the trip. Whether it's being in SF (Napa/Sonoma), Boston (Sam Adams), or Scotland (numerous distilleries), finding some way to incorporate a brewery/winery/distillery visit is always fun. Strictly for science! I don't think we've ever planned a vacation specifically for the beer/wine.

I did have a moment of doubt recently when my wife planned a trip with the kids without me (due to work) and I found myself going to seekabrew to see if there was anything I wanted her to look for while there!

A friend and co-worker of mine, who never drank during his first 51 years, started drinking beer last year. He set a goal of 1000 different beers during the past year. He almost made drinking beer unbearable. Almost, but not quite.
