There are a myriad of factors that make visiting far-away breweries a difficult task. It seems that it would be easier if the beer aspect of a vacation was guided by a local beer enthusiast/ designated driver.

Imagine going to a city or country that has many world-class breweries (a few on my list are San Diego, Portland, and Belgium) and not having to worry about finding places. The experience would be similar to episodes of No Reservations where Bourdain is shown around the city by a knowledgeable local.

Does anybody know of something like this? Is this something that you would consider doing?

May not be world class, but here in the Triangle, we have the Beltline Tours. One weekend they take you on a bus to the three breweries in Raleigh, then the next Saturday, you go to the three in Durham. Seems to be popular.

Sorry about the thread title, I forgot to edit it. Should read: Local Beer Guides

That's a great idea, and if you worked at it hard you would have great relationships with the breweries and be able to offer a pretty awesome experience.

I've forged relationships through this site and the other, that has allowed me to get "tours" of cities in some cases. I've also shown people around the Cleveland beer scene many times. Before going to a city, post in the local forums. This will give you a good chance at having a beer with one or more of the locals.

I have also wondered why there isn't a Bourdain-like show featuring beer and breweries. I would do it myself, but my personality is even more abrasive than the No Reservations host.

There used to be a show called three sheets on hd net that was like that, but it was about all types of alcohol, not just beer. I think they have another version now, but I can't get hd net anymore thanks to brighthouse networks sucking. You can also watch beer nuts on Hulu, or save your time for something better like not watching beer nuts on Hulu. Lastly there is a web show called bering tv on northernbrewer.com that is more focused towards home brewing, but they visit a lot of breweries as well. I highly recommend checking it out: http://www.northernbrewer.com/brewingtv/, the mostrecentepisode is about wine, but you can look back through the past episodes and see if any of the breweries call to you.

Absent a live person to serve as a guide, in the US I've found the Breweries Series books from Stackpole Books to be quite useful for planning travels.

They are written as both descriptions of the breweries and as Tour Guides so that you can also visit local attractions, etc.

Yea, wouldn't that be nice! My buddy just came back from Europe backpacking for a month. He said there was a website were people offered up rooms in their house for people traveling. Every house he stayed at he said everyone was awesome and welcoming. Imagine that here in the US? Ha won't happen. People just aren't the same here so I hear. I understand why. I have two spare bedrooms and if I didn't know you, I wouldn't offer it up. Just don't trust just anybody. They might try to drink all my good beer
