so a friend of mine is turning 21 next week,, and because hes showing some real interest in getting into craft beer, i decided i was gonna put together a 6 pack (or maybe more) of beer plus some glassware to sort of get him started off and try to learn different styles so he can see what he likes. Also wanted to try and put things in that are readily available. below is sort of what i was thinking. any suggestions or comments would be helpful

    - SN pale ale
    - Left hand milk stout
    - allagash white
    - Rochefort 10
    - Victory Dirtwolf
    - Weinhenstephaner original

Pretty good start IMO. What does he currently drink now? Does he lean towards hops or malt? Does he show any preferences yet? If so, I would try to take him further down the path he is gravitating towards.

    Nice selection though.

Looks like a solid list. You have most of the bases covered. Maybe a nice Imperial stout, a spring Saison, a brown ale, or a porter would make a nice addition, but those are all good beers. Your list would be just fine without the additions.

    For an imperial stout
    Ten Fidy, or Narwhal

    Saison
    Tank 7

    Brown Ale
    4 hands Oatmeal Brown

    Porter
    Edmond Fitzgerald

typical college student beer selection mostly, so its just hard to tell. i wanted to start off with a big spectrum

Very good list. The Tank 7 is a good recommendation too. I don't know if you were interested in getting him a scotch ale/wee heavy, but I tend to lean towards Orkney Skull Splitter and Dark Horse Scotty Karate in that category. Clown Shoes does Royal Standard too which isn't bad, but it only comes in the bomber format.

Firstly, I am a long term craft beer drinker and I would love the beers you selected:

    - SN pale ale (moderately hoppy)
    - Left hand milk stout
    - allagash white
    - Rochefort 10 (a very flavorful Quad)
    - Victory Dirtwolf (very hoppy!)
    - Weinhenstephaner original

Does your friend like beer with moderate to intense flavors?

Maybe giving beers that are less intense would be ‘better’ choices?

Some examples: New Belgium Fat Tire, Victory Summer Love (my favorite Blonde Ale), Blue Point Toasted Lager, Yuengling Lager, …

    Cheers!

Founder Breakfast Stout ... never had anyone not like the style, readily available. Really a good introduction beer for the craft and the style.

I agree, I remember SN being one of the first pale ales I drank and it wasn't bad. The only thing I might take off of that list is the Rochefort 10, while it is an amazing beer Im not sure if it belongs in the my friend is getting into beer category.

Sounds like a winner and its as fresh and local as it gets, and your friend can duplicate it if he likes it.

My girlfriend wasn't really into craft beer (or any beer really) when we first met. I really wanted her to enjoy beer with me or at least understand my hobby. I helped get her into it by exposing her to styles that really pushed her thoughts on what beer tastes like. I went with fruit beers and stouts with very prominent coffee flavors. She liked some and didn't like some of them. The key thing is that it or her interested in beer. Now she is buying bombers of top notch stuff all the time!

Moral of the story: bring a couple choices that push what people think beer can be.

If you are going to add Carton to the list I would recommend Boat Beer; it is on the hoppy side but overall just a very pleasant drinking beer.

    Cheers!

077xx is another very hoppy beer. I suppose we will find out if your friend is a hop head!?!

    Cheers!

You really couldn't go wrong with an SN beer, in my opinion, minus the BA/specialty stuff. Pale Ale, Torpedo, Nooner, Stout, etc. would all make good 'firsts'. Dogfish Head 60 & 90 for IPA's, Noble Rot for a Saison..

Plenty of good suggestions so far.

I don't care who took them over, but Toasted Lager from Blue Point is banging! Nice baseball beer for me!
