I appreciate the apparently good-faith poetic effort, John, and I'm sorry to be that scrooge, but it's 5-7-5, plain and simple. Or maybe Santa left some extra syllables under your tree this year...?

 

Hey, I figured John's was free form haiku, modern stuff. Remember, this is the guy who doesn't get too wrought up about our threads staying on topic. Let's cut him some slack. Spirit of the holidays, and all that.

 

I overlooked it, willfully, for several hours, but then my literary standards could no longer be ignored.

Somebody's got to mod the mod, in some realms, and even on a day of special generosity like this.

 

6 year old son got me a gift card from Chucks. Don't know if that says more about him or me.

 

My daughter's first response when my wife asks what they should get me for birthday/Christmas is beer.

 

Beer haiku should be its own thread. Btw, 5-7-5 isn't really a hard rule, even in classical haiku. As long as line 2 is longer it's cool (see Masaoko Shiki. His late period haiku, when he knew he was dying, is amazing and never formulaic)

Drinking Tweak
This beer is way too hot
Gimme fremont

May not be 5-7-5 though
More fun IMO

 

Plus, aren't Haikus supposed to refer to the seasons, or nature, or some such thing? We've likely been doing it wrong anyway.

Five here. It's a good test. Can't

I treated myself
to beer run through a hollowed
spruce log: Sahati.

And beef stroganoff
of tenderloin and fresh dill,
mushrooms, heavy cream.

Coffee-Cinnamon
B-Bomb was a fine dessert
for our winter night.
