I was gone on vacation for two weeks and I turned the AC off in my house before I left. They day before coming home (I was gone hiking and had no connectivity) I checked my WiFi thermostat and it was 86 in my house so I turned it on. In addition to my freezer that I converted into a cooler I have other beers in my spare bedroom. I had three cases stacked up and in the middle case I found this:

Cans in the other two case boxes or in another box on the floor were not damaged. None of the bottles seem to have anything wrong either. The two different beer types in question are in 16 oz cans and, in my opinion, over carbonated. At least the ones I drank before I got to these anyway.

Do you think an over carbonated can makes it more susceptible to heat explosion? In the future I plan to not let it get warmer than 80 in my house. Hopefully that will be sufficient.

Has to be a carbonation issue. That is really warm, but you could set cans out on the asphalt in the sun on a 90 degree day and not have that happen

That would make sense since I have two experiences to share about Quest cans:

    1. My friend had a can of that Kaldi explode on him as he was getting out of his car with a BYO 6-pack in his hand. He said the top blew off and there was geyser of beer.

    2. I got a Smoking Mirror Porter for free from a distributor and it was insanely overcarbonated.

This leads me to believe Quest has some carbonation issues with their cans. Never had anything from Vivant.

I had a 16oz can from an online order explode during transit. They resent the same beer and when it arrived, the top was warped and the can was hard as a rock. I went ahead and poured it and it was definitely over carbonated. I don't know if the heat during transit made it worse, but perhaps.

If we're away for an extended time I bump it up to 74, close the blinds and it's fine. Normally at 70. The compressor would run forever if it's 96 outside trying to pull the temp and humidity out. It taxes the system more than needs to be.

Sounds like the beer was just eager to be drank! It hopped out of the cans hoping to find some mouths to fill!!

My guess is most delivery trucks eclipse 80s this time of year. Beer problem not house problem.

Perhaps a combination of over carbonation with a poor quality canning operation. Guessing here.

I've seen more Quest cans explode than any other cans in my store

I once had a can of Hoperation Overload explode as I was setting it on the counter to purchase. It was still in the 4 pack holder. I guess there's still the potential for failure, cans or bottles. Regardless of weather, I always zip lock bag cans.

Vivant just sent out a notification about this. I just saw it on Facebook (Craft beer in Michigan page) saying that Pothole stout was exploding because of some brewing process or another. Contact them or checkout the page.

We just returned on Sunday night to a 84 degree house after being gone a week, yet no can go boom. Had a four-er of Elevated on the counter plus a nostalgic sixer of Gwar-B-Q beer circa 2012 that's been there since, well, circa 2012. Oddly, I did leave a can of Vivant at the in-laws house in their garage fridge. Hope they never unplug the fridge unless my father in law has that can first.

Crap, good point. Fingers crossed on your incoming porch bomb. If you have hatches, you may want to batten them down.

Was thinking this myself. I have an AC unit in my bedroom only, so the rest of my house is roasting in the summer months. The other day my thermostat read 86 (in the middle of other days almost just as hot). Plenty of beer around and nothing of the sort happened.

Have several Vivant cans in my cellar, the oldest being Escoffier. It isn't frig cold, but around 58 in winter and up to 65 in summer. Only had one of those that had an issue. It didn't explode like the OP photo. Instead, I didn't even notice anything until I picked the can up and noticed that it was half empty and there was a stain on the shelf. This happened about a year ago and the remaining cans of Burial Wizard, Tart Side, and Pumpkin Tart are ok at this point
