    Hey guys,

I am new on here. I just started seriously trying different craft beers a few months ago. I like pretty much all kinds of beer, but am really liking the darker stuff (browns, stouts, porters) and I am really liking barrel-aged beers.

Some of my favorites include: Harviestoun Ola Dubh 12, Ballast Point Victory at Sea, Great Divide Chocolate Oak Aged Yeti, Firestone Walker Wookey Jack Black Rye IPA, Dogfish Head Indian Brown Ale, Deschutes Black Butte Porter, Real Ale Brewhouse Brown Ale & Full Moon Pale Rye Ale, Laughing Dog Anubis Imperial Coffee Porter, Rochefort Trappistes 10, Avery The Beast Grand Cru Ale, Breckenridge 72 Imperial Chocolate Cream Stout, Black Butte XXV. I like IPA's a lot too, but I prefer the ones I listed above.

I have some Dogfish Head Theobroma, Ommegang Game of Thrones - Take the Black Stout, Firestone DDBA, Lakewood Punkel, Deep Ellum IPA in my possession right now.

I think some of these are coming out soon, and I want to try them: Founders Breakfast Stout, Dogfish Head Punkin, Saint Arnold Pumpkinator, Jester King Black Metal.

Could y'all please help a new guy out and maybe provide me with some things that match with what I posted above (dark, stout, porters, chocolate, coffee, barrel-aged)? Preferably something that is available now or coming out in the next few months. I can't do cream beers cause the lactose issue.

Thanks! I'll do my best to contribute and do my part when I can. I usually shop at Specs in Ft. Worth.

When I'm trying to explore new styles, I just start on the BA style page and try to find well-rated stuff that I can actually get. You can also work backward from a beer you like and try finding others in the same style.

Black Metal is year-round, you shouldn't have any problems finding it. As for other Russian imperial stouts, North Coast Old Rasputin is my favorite year-round. Oskar Blues Ten Fidy is also good, but much more expensive. Real Ale's 15th anniversary and Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout are two of my favorite (easily attainable) fall/winter seasonals.

For Belgian quads like Rochefort 10, try St Bernardus Abt 12 and Ommegang Three Philosophers.

The beers I listed are by no means exhaustive, but should get you started.

This years batch of Ten Fidy is starting to hit shelves. I highly suggest getting ahold of a 4-pack of that.

Welcome to the forums, always fun seeing a new face around these parts. In regards to the information provided I assume you are a DFW BA then.

You are in luck as it is almost stout/porter/dark beer season with winter approaching. I would highly recommend some Founders Breakfast Stout once it makes it to Texas. BCBS if we do get this in November (not sure if we will yet). Pumpkinator in October. Karbach Hellfighter if you manage to get to Houston.

Black Metal (Farmhouse) should be readily available in your area right now as it is a pretty common find. I would highly recommend seeking out the OG version as it is something truly terrible to behold.

In regards to BA beers, I would highly recommend seeking out brews from Clown Shoes as they are readily available and pretty damn good. Luchador en Fuego, Porcine Unidragon, and Very Angry Beast to name some that you could possibly encounter now.

On the quad side try Buffalo Bayous Figaro, it is pretty damn awesome and figgy.

Have you tried the Lakewood brews? Temptress is a mighty awesome milk stout (not sure how you will handle it with the lactose issues you mentioned).

That is all I got for now as I'm drawing blanks.

Good luck and Welcome once again!

Don't shy away from asking questions since we all started this way at one point or another.

Thanks guys, really appreciate all the input so far. I feel like I've learned a lot in these past few months, but there is so much more to learn.

Yeah, I live in Ft. Worth. Thanks for all of your suggestions. I'm pretty sure that the Specs by me has a few Clown Shoes. I tried the Lakewood Punkel and that's about it from them. Would love to try the Temptress, but I don't handle the lactose well.

I hear that the Rahr Winter Warmer is really good. Looking forward to trying that one in December.

Try to find the barrel aged version of the Rahr Winter Warmer. In 2011 it was phenomenal, I even made a homebrew clone version, 2012 paled in comparison but I have big hopes for 2013.

    Winter is coming...
Prairie Bomb should hopefully be hitting in the next couple of months. You might be able to find St Arnold's Bishop's Barrel some places in Dallas to drink on premise, not sure about FW. Deschutes Obsidian Stout is pretty easy to find. I also remember seeing Lagunitas Stout around last week. Ballast Point Sea Monster may still be available.

Go to The Flying Saucer and ask to speak to Noah. He's one of "us" and he'll get you headed in the right direction.

Good man, careful with that Ten Fidy. It's not your average beer lol. Friend blacked out drinking all 4 in one night. It was quite awesome.

I would recommend that you shop at Total Wine and King's Liquor on Berry St. You may find some stuff that Spec's doesn't carry. Just check them out
