Weihenstephaner (anything but Korbinian and Vitus), Prima Pils, and something with lots of flavor that isn't bitter...it's Rubaeus season!

Also, I'd ditch the Leffe too, but that's just me. This is a tricky question, because the experience will stick with him forever!

What we don't like day may well be a craving tomorrow. I think you need to impart in your Dad the rewards of experimenting, trying something new and being open to developing his pallet. This is what I think is at hte heart of your intention to help him so to speak.

He's your Dad you gotta make him think that your idea is actually his idea. Don't call him a newbie that is taboo.
Copliment his timeless taste in what is good and buy him some of the best shit on offer and absalutely blow his fuckin mind. No holds barred. Buy him what you like. Show him that you are onto something and with all due respect you want him on board as well.

We can all give advice (since you aked for it) but you know your dad best, just as he knows you.

At the end of the day the beer is plentiful but you only have one father. Take it from me man be greatfull he is still around to throw back a cold one with you.

I wasn't disagreeing with you. Quite the opposite. "Cloyingly sweet" made me think "malt", which is what I usually associate with body as well--hence "heavy". Someone who thinks YL is heavy with take a malty beer and put it on his pancakes...

Samuel Smith? Maybe the Nut Brown or Oatmeal Stout will strike a chord with him. If not, the Pure Brewed or Organic Lagers are always solid!

I would just do an assortment of craft pale ales and lagers. Dales would not have been my first choice because though its a "pale ale", it is more aggressively hopped for the style. Toss in an allagash white maybe, or a similar easier belgian, and then my biggest reccomendation would be to doss in a schwartzbier! You need to show him that "dark beer" doesn't mean thick, heavy, and overwhelming. Show him how you can have delicate roasty and chocolate notes in a beer that is no more overwhelming in mouthfeel and flavor than any mellow lager.

German Lagers, scotch ales, rye beers, brown ales, and amber/red ales are usually a hit with my dad.

You had the order right. Victory Headwaters is a fantastic "gateway" beer.

i'm not sure if it's available in ohio but i'd recommend deschutes black butte porter. my friends who prefer light lagers all love it. pretty light (in mouthfeel not color), very smooth, not bitter, nice chocolatey taste.

Agree with what everyone had been saying about the wheat beers.Blue Moon, Shock Top (not really craft though), or maybe something like 21st amendment Hell or High Watermelon. Another thought would be a brown ale or ESB. My Dad tends to like wheat beers but he is starting to like beers like Newcastle and Fullers.

I think it's funny but my dad loves the gose and Berliner we make. I find it funny that he digs the sours as he came up on BMC. He also likes a good DIPA

Also, think about some of the "gateway" offerings, if available: Blue Moon Belgian White, Batch 19, and Third Shift...also, if available in your area, Summit Horizon is good...I also just had the Estrella Damm Daura and it was light and malty.

I think a solid nut brown porter like moose drool or even Scmaltz messiah nut brown ale would be good intros. If he likes one of those, then throw in a Fullers London Porter. If he bites on those, you might just have a convert.

Hofbrau Original comes to mind, being the beer that I used to wean my college roommate off of the AAL diet. Nice and light-bodied, with a good balance of basic malt sweetness and breadiness versus hop bitterness...not too complex at all, but crisp, clean, and refreshing. At 5.1%, it's also a decent middle ground between Yuengling and stronger, more complex craft offerings.

What about Hacker-Pschorr Hefe Weisse? Just had that recently for the first time and thought it wasn't heavy at all and It also had a nice wheaty flavor to it.

Even if I find him a beer he likes a lot better than Yuengling, I know that he'll keep drinking Yuengling. He doesn't budget for beer at all. He would consider it splurging JUST to get himself a few Yuenglings. So, I know I'm not going to convert him. I'm not trying to. I'm just trying to give him some world class beer, because I like the guy.
