The first craft brewery on the east coast, Wm. Newman Brewing Co., used 1 and 3 gallon "cubitainers" (pic of 3 gallon being filled on linked site).

You could get them filled (or refilled) at the brewery as a "growler", and he also did a small business wholesaling them to local stores. After a few days they used to swell up and look as if they were about to explode as they sat in the open coolers of at least one nearby grocery store.

A number of other '80s craft brewers used them before the ½ gallon glass jug became the standard growler, and, IIRC from previous threads some brewers still using them.

We get at least one cider in this format in the US... Crispin cider.

I've always wanted to order some from belgium... but I've heard about transit issues with the bag breaking during shipping.

It's called a "case". In simpler times, before the rise of all these fancy overpriced bottle shops, that's how people used to purchase beer. Typically 24 bottles or cans, or 12 standard bombers are boxed for a more reasonable price than buying individually. I guess its like taking a few box wines, and putting them in a box. These, cases, can sometimes be cellared for extended aging, at the very least they should keep unless they are fresh hopslam or lagunitas sucks. These boxed beers do not taste plastic-y usually, but some strange "cases" do exist. I hope this helps. Cheers

Back in the day we used to buy Genny cream ale beer balls. They were in a wax lined box with a tap. Fill it with ice and you were good to go.anywhere.

A fair number of breweries here sell this, eg http://www.beerbarrels2u.co.uk/party-barrels.asp usually in 18 or 36 pint sizes

Good things are they are fresh, the size etc, bad things they go off quick and you can only really have cask level carbonation so they are a little limited in scope. Good for homebrewers if you want that breweries yeast too

edit- that site says it can last 4 weeks.

Girardin lambic is flat anyway, so lends itself perfectly to this. Comes out nice and foamy. Lovely stuff.

Triple Rock Brewery in Berkeley CA used to do a "Beer in a Box" which was essentially a growler of beer, but in a refillable box (it had a sealable cap). They switched to the standard glass jug growlers somewhat recently. The box was fun though.

Back in the early 80's Palo Alto Brewing Co. sold their London Real Ale in a beer-in-a-box. At that time Candlestick Park, home of the Giants and 49er's prohibited cans and bottles but not alcohol. My brother and I would bring a box to all the Giants games we went to that season. Unfortunately PABC went out of business and SF Parks & Rec changed the rules added alcohol to the list of prohibited items. Fun times while it lasted...

....sorry to rehash an old thread.

But I just recently felt in love with gueze sours...I saw this on biab and I am actually thinking about getting. Is it as simple as putting it in the fridge and enjoying it for a week or so.....or would I be better off not doing this. Seems like a great way to get some lambic in my belly without opening a bottle

Hey I posted this thread last year but it was deleted. Apparently Cantillon Gueuze was available in a goon bag as well.

I have seen these used only for unblended pure & fruit lambiek. They have no carbonation so no issue.

Surprised to hear about geuze being sold in these, never seen that before.
