Going to be going to a family reunion with the in-laws this summer. Driving up from Georgia. Spending a day or two in Anderson, IN. Anyone know of any local places of interest?
I could be wrong, but I don't think there's much of anything. I'd stop at a good bottle shop on the way up.
Anderson is a smaller town north of Indy, so there are a lot more options on the north side of Indy or even to the north in Muncie which is not too far away and being a college town just has more options. In Anderson the liquor stores that tend to have local craft beer include Keg N Bottle or Lucky's. There is a new brewpub that is about a year old that opened at the Hoosier Park race track/casino called Dan Patch Brewhouse that usually has a good mix of local/regional craft beers on draft (http://www.hoosierpark.com/dan_patch_brewhouse.html)
I remembered two other local pizza places that rotate Indiana craft beers on tap in Anderson. Those are Tommy J's and Greek's .. good luck!
Not sure about the beer situation but HBO did a documentary a few years back called Dirty Driving: Thundercars of Indiana about the local Anderson raceway. Highly entertaining and definitely recommend finding that on Amazon before your trip.
Believe it or not, a couple of places have really good selection in good ol Atown. I've been able to score KBS there. Anyway, check out any of the Keg & Bottles in town. East side (by the college) 2206 E 6th St Anderson, IN (it's really on Scatterfield Road, but has a 6th St address. West Side 1406 Park Rd Anderson, IN North Side 2124 Broadway St Anderson, IN For grub, check out Scampy's (best pizza in town), Pizza King (second best pizza in town, shitty beer selection though), King Gyro for gyros, chicken, and ribs, and Art's Pizza, but get the roast beef sandwich. Oh, and Tommy J's. Tiny place, but good pizza and subs, and usually have Three Floyd's on tap. Hoosier Park is about the only place of interest in town. They have a couple decent resturants inside with above average beer selection. http://www.hoosierpark.com/
Head 20 minutes to Muncie.. 2 great bottle shops. And 3 great bars. Heorot, savages and fickle peach.
Yeah, your best bet is Muncie for good beer... Hit up Savage's Ale House + The Fickle Peach for draft and Friendly Package Jackson Street + Muncie Liquors Wheeling Avenue for bottles. I have scored KBS and BCBS variants in the past at Keg & Bottle in Anderson, but obviously they'll both be all gone by now. Not sure of any places that have good draft lines either.
Anderson is just a short drive from Indy, as was previously noted - there is a great bar called Ale Emporium on the Northeast side of Indy right off the interstate, so if you can make the short trip, it's worth visiting. There's also a delightful little nanobrewery called Books & Brews that is also right off the interstate in NE Indy that is absolutely worth the trip... they do a new beer every week, generally focus on subtle beers, and the people that work there are fantastic.
