Heading to Maui (Lahaina) this weekend. Anything brewed locally that's worth checking out? Mai-tai's aren't a bad plan-B....
There's a small brewery on Maui you probably never heard of -> Maui Brewing Company. Go visit their pub and/or brewery , very close to Lahaina ... Nothing beats their FRESH Coconut Porter
Copied from another thread where I posted the same info: Hey man, if you look at the places guide you will find a lot of reviews I have added for Maui. I usually go once a year and I added some new spots from my last trip this past July. http://beeradvocate.com/beerfly/list?city=Kahului&c_id=US&s_id=HI http://beeradvocate.com/beerfly/list?city=Kihei&c_id=US&s_id=HI http://beeradvocate.com/beerfly/list?city=Lahaina&c_id=US&s_id=HI http://beeradvocate.com/beerfly/list?city=Makawao&c_id=US&s_id=HI http://beeradvocate.com/beerfly/list?city=Paia&c_id=US&s_id=HI Here are my top recommendations for Maui: * Maui Brewing - the tour is pretty interesting and for $10 you get the tour, a flight at the end of the tour, and a token for a full pour at the brewpub down the street. * Tamura's - good bottle selection * Whole Foods - good bottle selection * The Wine Corner - good bottle selection
From Cali and never heard of Maui Brewing Co? Must be a newbie. Decent Big Swell IPA Great Coconut Porter. Not sure if you'll be on Maui when Maui Brewing Company's new brewery/tasting room opens in Sept or Oct. in Kihei. Also you have a lot more good selections of bottles to choose from n the islands these days. Thanks to Stone and Maui Brew Co.
I would hit the Maui Brewing BREWPUB as well ... way bigger tap selection at the brewpub than the brewery (unless things have changed since last summer). Buy some "Maui Built" clothing as well ... they only sell them on Maui so they are pretty exclusive and you don't see much of "Maui Built" gear on the mainland Freaking love Maui - have a great time!
Hey OP I am in Maui too right now. Have been here since last Monday. I'm staying in Wailea but leaving tomorrow. Monkeypod here in Wailea I hear has the best draft selection on the island. I've visited it three times since I got here. Plus their food is outstanding and the place has a great vibe. Sculpin on draft was a great treat for me--maybe not for you being from Cali. Some Deschuttes, Maui Brewing and other very nice craft on draft. Goose Island Sofie on draft was nice. Wasn't pleased with the Kona beers (owned by AB InBev FYI) but did enjoy the Maui Brewing beers including their Big Swell IPA. Have a great time!!
Just because somethings owned by AB-InBev you dont like it? I guess youre not impressed with bourbon county stout then because goose island is owned by AB. I cant wait for the day when AB finally figures out how to conquer craft beer by hording all the hops and making a good ipa calling it BLIPA and selling it for $20 a 36 pack. BLIPA FTW!
Was there a month ago at the brewpub. If you think the regular version of coconut porter is tasty, wait till you try the imperial version. Personally, I'm not a huge fan of the regular coconut porter, but the imperial version is amazing.
Is it necessary to rent a car in Maui? I'm heading there on Thursday and am staying in Kapalua. I plan on hitting Maui brewing and maybe one or two beer pubs.
+1 to this. There's a lot to see on the island, and frankly, I can't imagine taking it all in without a rental car.
Speaking of Hawaii, anyone in the big island with tips? I'm a pharm student here and the best I see is big island brewhouse, kona brew, and kadota's in Hilo (but it's a hit or miss and sometimes I'm scared of how hot it gets in the store for all the shelved beers). Anyone living here for bottle shares or any info would help! Thanks!
don't want to hijack but i'll be in Maui in 2 weeks. if any aloha Maui BA's are in desperate need of something let me know. won't have a ton of room in suitcase but will happily bring something to trade. will be at Maui Brewing Brewpub, swimming in the ocean, and hanging out at Lahaina skatepark really looking forward to trying the imperial coconut porter. cheers
Checkout monkeypod, http://m.monkeypodkitchen.com/wailea/beer-list/ One of the best tsp list in Maui outside MBC.
At the brewpub...worth the visit! I've had Maui Beer Co's stuff canned on the mainland and was never a fan. Much better fresh (like all things, I suppose). Coconut porter is the way to go. I could do without the IPA "Big Swell". Worth a trip for sure if you're in Lahaina.
