Wasn't sure what regional thread to throw this in... heading to Mexico (Punta de Mita - outside of Puerto Villarta) in two days and I am wondering is anyone knows of any good beers down there? I am assuming not a lot of US Craft beer is distributed down there...I might have to just deal with Coronas and fruity drinks but I am hoping to get some advice on what local beers to grab or how to find some US Craft down there - thanks everyone!
Was at a resort in Puerto Vallarta a few years ago and it was basically all the Modelo products, but don't look past a local cervasa. Something about enjoying a Modelo Especial watching the sun set that is fantastic.
Tis the season for Noche Buena, the Xmas seasonal for Modelo. Baja also has a burgeoning craft scene, so see if you can find some of their goodies. Cucapá has a decent IPA and has been trying other styles.
I moved the thread to the Latin America forum for you... Re: beers. I hope you can find Cucapá (as mentioned above). We went further south in Mexico last January (Zihuatanejo) and there wasn't anything "crafty" that I could find. I did like the León I tried quite a bit and found Indio to be pretty decent, too. Lots of pale adjunct lagers, which make for pretty good drinking in their warm climate (in all honesty) and are good bases for the fruity or savory micheladas as well (no, I'm not talking about this or this, which are both really poor examples of the drink, in my opinion). Enjoy! Cheers, Brian
Minerva is the largest craft brewery in Mexico. They have some decent stuff and are made in Guadalajara, which is not far from Punta Mita. Otherwise, try some of the suggestions in this thread, however you will find it hard to get good beer at regular bars or stores. If you must drink Modelo, I'd suggest Negra Modelo (vienna lager). If Cuauhtemoc, I'd go for Bohemia clara (pilsner).
http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/11174/97641 This IPA was just average, but should be available where you are going. I guess if you are craving some hops you could do worse. Other than that, I just drink Pacifico and Negro Modelo, not bad and less metallic than most mexican beers! Have fun!!
The Noche Buena is delicious - available only around Christmastime! Otherwise, you can never go wrong with an Indio.
Craft beer movement is incipient but there are a couple of breweries with potential. I am not sure how far these beers are distributed in Mexico but you should definetly try beer from Insurgente, Aguamala, 3B, 686, Cucapa, Ramuri, Propaganda, Border Psycho, Minerva (the Stout is pretty good), and Calavera. In my opinion the best craft beer is made in the northern parts of Mexico but there are a couple of brews in the south that are worth a try. Just be warned that there are many breweries that are inconsistent but this usually happens with the less known ones. The ones I named are the more professional ones, in other words, not home brewers. Cheers and let me know if you get to try any of them. Just to add, the cover of Beer Advocate Mag for this month is actually outside 686 Brewery in Mexicali. There is an article about the Baja Beer scene you should read to get familiar with the Mexican beer scene. It is definetly interesting to see the amount of breweries spawning in Baja California and the rest of Mexico.
HELLO, I think Altenor gave really good advice as well as luisfrancisco. I am a big fan of craft beer and will soon start my own craft beer company in south east Mexico and also I am exploring the Mexico City market. I hope to keep you all posted when my brand goes public in a few months. Also, I would like any suggestion regarding branding. Should I use the same brand and beer I will use in the south east market, in the Mexico City market, or would you design two different beers with different brands in each region?? THANKS!
Same beer for both regions. Marketing should be secondary to making great beer. If the beer's good, people will want it and buy it no matter what, in which case it could be called Cervezita de verga and they'll still buy it, whether in Veracruz or DF. Con eso, te deseo suerte, mi pana, y q me mandes un par de frias para probar. Haha.
