I'm going to Minneapolis for work next week and hope to find some great beer, any recommendations? I've heard Surly is outstanding but haven't tried any yet as I'm from Central PA Thanks!

Surly Wet is a must buy/drink while you are there. Furious also. Do you have Stone, Lagunitas, Odell, Boulevard? Are you wanting to bring back beer or just looking to try new stuff?

Look for local craft too, Steel Toe, Indeed, Minneapolis Town Hall. I'm sure more of the guys that live in the cities can chime in and tell you more as well. Hope you have a great visit!

Stop by Minneapolis Town Hall and have a glass or two of Masala Mama, then grab some miscellaneous pints of Surly..Furious, Wet, or all from most any store. Steel Toe Brewing is in St. Louis Park, bottles sold at SLP liquor barrel..check out Size 7, Rainmaker, or grab a growler from the brewery, check the website. Indeed..day tripper. And here's an interesting link, for reference: http://mspmag.com/Eat-And-Drink/Articles/Features/Tap-Room-Guide/?page=1

Aside from Steel Toes home city, St Louis Park (which is right next to Mpls), their bombers are available at Zipps in Mpls and The Ale Jail in St Paul.

Also try Summit Saga. Great new beer from a brewery that we take for granted. IMO

I recommend that you swing by Blue Nile, drink local beers, and talk to Al (feloniousmonk). Al can also be seen at the Harriet taproom (as DJ) on Wednesday nights. Both Blue Nile and Harriet are 2-3 blocks from light rail stations.

After that, I suggest you visit Republic and Town Hall, which are across the street from one another. Once you have a feel for the locals, hit Zipps (or my new favorite: Stinson Wine, Beer & Spirits).

My personal recommendations: Surly Furious and Wet (and Hell if you like lagers), Town Hall Masala Mama (growlers at the brewpub only), Harriet West Side (growlers only - brewery), Indeed Day Tripper and Midnight Ryder, and a Summit or two (Saga is nice, and they have released some great beers in the Unchained series). Also, if you like pumpkin beers, Flat Earth's Mummy Train was just released, and is drinking well right now.

I know that list is hop-heavy. If you are looking for darker beers, Surly Bender and Coffee Bender are always great. I enjoyed Steel Toe's Dissent quite a bit when I was at the brewery, and the current Leinenkugel's Big Eddy (Baltic Porter), while not strictly a MN beer, is solid. You're a month early for Darkness, not to mention Summit Winter Ale, which has been drinking great the last two years.

As mentioned by someone else, you can't get Odell in PA, but it is everywhere here. Great beers in every style. Likewise, we are one of the 12 states that get Tallgrass. Other notable brands we can get, but you can't (or only get limited selection): Alaskan, Boulevard, Dark Horse, Jolly Pumpkin.

holy shit are you the concierge to MN. You have absolutely nailed everything, except some cool places to eat. I can only add the Happy Gnome/Muddy Pig shameful 3 block walk. Nice job, you my man are very well in the know.

And get your ass to the North Loop for some great food and beer (Haute Dish, Bar La Grassa, Fulton, etc.).

Get some provider. It's figuratively my favorite beer of the summer.

+1 The North Loop is great. In your first post you forgot to mention Surly's best canned beer, Surlyfest, which is also out now.

So far I've picked up a 4-pack of furious, had Fulton IPA and Boom Island Thoprock. Got some great suggestions here and from locals. Some recommended are:
    Mckenzie's
    Bryant lake Bowl
    Butcher and Boar
Devil's Advocate (went last night, great meatballs!)
Also fiancee and i just had brunch at hell's kitchen, had huevos rancheros that were excellent.

Another vote for Minneapolis Town Hall -- one of my "must taste's" at the Great Taste of the Midwest this year, based on how good they were last year. They didn't disappoint -- the Mango Mama IPA is top tier, and their other brews are quite good as well. Wish they had Chicago distribution...
