Can't wait to hear marquis and his take on this.
Me? Cask is the new craft beer. I loved craft but with a number of exceptions the whole thing is starting to get on my nerves now.

Sounds like he needs to find a new pub... surely if all the beers in a pub tasted like urine, sweat, and vomit respectively, it's more likely something wrong with the establishment, not a certain label for beer?

There's loads of shit traditional beer but I don't let it make me hate traditional beer.

    Enjoyed your comment though Bevis!

Hilarious. Sourpuss who doesn't like 'sour' beer....

The present beer culture in the UK is good - in time the best microbreweries will win out and those that are poor will fade away. Meanwhile there's still plenty of dross for those that like it.

My objection is the use of the word "craft" which we struggle to understand as much as our American friends can't grasp session beer.
Practically all the long established independent brewers would be labelled as "craft" in the US. Just look in BA about how Sam Smith's and Fuller's are regarded.A local brewer-Castle Rock (brewer of a CBOB in 2010) had a notice advertising "Our first craft beer" in one of their pubs.Selling as you may imagine at a ridiculous price.
I've had Titanic Stout ( a decent tipple) adulterated withchocolate and vanilla and with cherries. It doesn't need it, it's not improved by it so why do they bother?
I've been drinking true craft for quite a while; I embraced the micro revolution when it came and then tried the new wave of so called "craft" beer. I get the impression of a load of schoolkids doing things just to be different . There's some wonderful new beers out there but it doesn't have to taste of grapefruit to be good , structure is much more important

Structure is very important. I've said this for years. Its a popular topic in wine circles but among beer geeks it seems to be a non issue.

As for the new vs old craft beer revolution I have a foot in each camp. Too many of the 'older' craft breweries still need to up there game to produce beers which are beyond banal, dull and uninspiring while too many of the 'newer' craft breweries are too keen to be driven by gimmicks and the challenge to put in as many unusual ingredients into the brewing kettle as possible.

Guys, what exactly do you mean by structure? Like you say Zimbo, I've only heard it mentioned by wine geeks. I'm intrigued.

It's when the beer just fits together nicely, you get a little of everything.Like music where each instrument complements the rest and the result is harmony.

Good luck to them. I hope more and more young people start taking an interest in real ale so that it never reaches saturation point. As for the chilli porter, I would have scoffed at that a while ago but I recently had a bloody good one from New Zealand.

Unless it falls on my long weekend or a week off I'll not make it either.
Edit: Long range scan says I'll be off on the Friday which is worse than useless as I'll be working early Saturday.

Forever destined not to attend beer festivals.
