A relatively recent phenomenon for me, and one that is occurring with increased frequency is that of alcohol (beer) induced blackouts. I am predictably concerned. I've done a fair and moderate amount of research and reading on the topic. While a lot of is still fuzzy, experts think that when a person's blood alcohol level rises too quickly, the ability of the brain is seriously inhibited from converting short-term memory to long-term memory. When this happens, the person drinking is said to experience a blackout. In my own experience, I have absolutely no recollection of anything that I did, said, or happened to me while I was experiencing the blackout. It is a little scary and alarming. I just wondered if any other BA readers have experienced this. Further, did this experience change any of your beer habits?

It all depends. My favorite beers tend to be higher ABV offerings (Imperial Stouts, Belgian Tripels and Quads, etc.). I can put a few down over the course of a session. I will admit that I don't tend to nurse my beers. I don't guzzle them down either. But I tend to drink them at a steady gait.

That's pretty extreme. Are you being serious? And why do you suggest that?

I am definitely being serious. I suggest that because your body is telling you that as well.

You should at least consult your family doctor.

Maybe find someone with one of those cheapie BAC testers & see how your level rises as you imbibe. I would be greatly concerned...

I remember my first beer :stuck_out_tongue:
But really- you were drinking too quickly, that's all it is. Everyone's body is different and will metabolize ethanol a little differently. You could drink a 10% bomber in an hour, but you'll still be processing that much booze (~4 units) over another hour or two at least.
My advice would be to acknowledge how much you're consuming and drink more slowly.

I was having a problem with that a couple years ago. Mostly occurred on the nights my favorite bar did 10$ all you can drink. DIPAs went down soooo easily. It worried me also, I quickly decided to change my habits and figured paying for my drinks would help moderate my consumption. The staff where I go to drink are also good at serving me the occasional water and making sure my drinking doesn't get out of hand.

Maybe there's something else involved, but normally it's just common sense. If you know you'll be having a bunch o beers, drink plenty of water before, have a good meal, every now and again have a glass of water, eat some more, drink some more, have another water, etc. If that doesn't work, you're drinking too much. Or there's something else going on.

Funny you say that. I just ordered one of the BAC testers. I will use it from now on. I am definitely concerned. The good news is that my memory at other times is not and has not been affected. It just happens to me during my periods of blackout.

You just might end up being a Session Beer drinker... "Not that there's anything wrong with that".

Or, my body could be telling me to drink less and more slowly too.

Not much before. A ton afterwards. (But that's a whole different matter!)

Great answer. So did you have to ask the staff at your favorite bar to watch out for you? Or did they just start doing it on their own? I gather you haven't had a blackout in a while?
