I feel that after a certain point a good buzz is no longer a "good" buzz. The staff at my bar in no way made my visits any less enjoyable or fun. They will still let me drink as much as I want if I insist, as long as my wife is driving me home. Drinking craft beer isn't always about the buzz anyways.

It's not a science. I am not very good at predicting the point at which I will succumb to a blackout. My most recent one happened last night. There are no tell-tale signs that a blackout is approaching. I feel good up until that point. I do not get nauseous. I don't act drunk. I can function the whole time. I can "walk the line". But at some point, the blackout just kicks in. And I never find out about it until the next morning, when the people who I was with the night before start telling me about things that I did or said and about which I had absolutely no recollection. By the way, I haven't done anything that I have had to regret terribly. But I have eaten things or said or done things that I was completely unaware of. Last night, for instance, the person whom I was with told me that I asked my waitress at the restaurant that we were at for a "decaf" hot chocolate. I'm told the waitress eyeballed me like I was some sort of nut. I cracked up when I was told that I did that. By the way, I would never have known that I even ordered dessert were it not for the fact the person I was with informed me today.

The point of all this is to say: I'm not sure when I should do a lockdown on my drinking because I don't know when the point of blackout has been reached, or is within reach.

Reminds me of the college/grad school days with the awful poison jagermeister. Find your buzz limit and switch up to low abv after that. If I have two 10% or higher abv beers I will switch to session. Some beers seem to hit me harder than others.
Quads and Barleywines will totally mess me up if I end the night with those. I hate blackouts but I have overdone it on more than one occasion and I hate myself the day after. Get a buzz, back off the high power stuff and maintain that buzz.

you need to get professional help and stop drinking. it is completely irresponsible for anyone to say that you need to slow down, drink more water, switch to lighter beer, etc. you need to quit.

Lots of people have experienced this before and it's nothing to be alarmed about unless you continue to let yourself get to that point. Just slow down your drinking and understand your limits. Being at a beer bar can be differernt in the ways that they may have a lot of stuff on tap that you want to try. But understand that its not the end of the world if you don't get to try all of them. There's also nothing wrong with ordering a water and drinking during one of the rounds. You'll feel much better when you wake up if you do that.

But if you try this and still can't go out to casually have a beer with friends without blacking out, then I would suggest picking up a new hobby because that type of habbit can get you into a lot of trouble.

Stay away from alcohol if that's the deal, you could drink a few beers and kill someone if you drive. Or you could be an ass and someone kill you in a bar fight, and you'll never know it. Spending time in military towns is sobering, you/me/we aren't all that tough. Ya never know, if you can't handle it just don't.

Lots of good suggestions here. The high ABV thing is a major factor. Something I've done before is to save my empties (if you're out, just keep a list of what you're drinking on your phone or whatever) and then tally it all up in the morning. Say you have two 8.5% beers, a 12% and a 9%, you add up the ABVs (assuming they're all 12 oz's- adjust math accordingly for different serving sizes) and divide by 6 (a pretty average ABV%.) This will tell you that although you may have had 4 beers, in actuality you drank the equivalent of 6.33 beers. I personally found that this made me a lot more conscious of what I was drinking, and has led to me skipping rounds in favor of water and grabbing a PA next instead of another DIPA.
    Good luck!

If 6 beers makes you blackout, yeesh. Might be a slight issue. But for the record, the official measurement of 5% abv 12 oz is one beer.

Are you smoking (Mary) while drinking or after? Cuz sometimes when I do I just get all sorts of f'd up even when I have one bomber of a higher alc beer. Most the time il wake up in my bed just not remembering the last hour or so of the night.

Yes, I used to experience them frequently. And yes, they are scary. Way back before I learned to appreciate/respect beer, I was to a point where I would black out after a six pack because I was drinking everyday. I wouldn't even have to get drunk or "buzzed" up for that matter. It had me concerned to the point that I didn't touch a drop of alcohol for nearly 6 years.

Then about 3 years ago, I broke down and drank a Dead Guy Ale because the bottle looked cool. The rest is history. I never drink more than 6 beers in a night (and only on the weekends), and I have changed by whole attitude towards beer. I used to drink to get hammered, now I realize that craft beer is not like BMC swill, but is something to be respected. I often tell myself, "I don't drink beer, I experience it!"

For me, the drive in doing this wasn't blackouts, but determining overall consumption. And now that you mention it- I'd forgotten, but I actually did use 5 in my first calculation, but switched to 6 because the numbers were too grim :/ Who the hell could drink only 5% beer anyway?

Plus the bonus affect of helping prevent a hangover. I almost always mix up 1-2 glasses of water in between bottles being opened if I'm with friends. If I'm at the bar I always have a glass of water near me. If I'm at a beer fest I always bring a backpack or sorts full of bottles of water.

If we're talking sours I could do 5% or less all night. Threw down a New Glarus Berlinner Weiss tonight which is 3%. If I had more I woulda consumed em all, it was a damn good beer.

Remove alcohol from this for a second OP, & ask how soon before you'd go to the doc? If I ate peanuts/chicken & or kale got the same results I would be quasi freaked out. This bears further study from professionals far qualified than the likes of me & others on this site this time of night...
