I know I dont have near as much beer knowledge as someone like kzoobrew or others, but I got to thinking today. When people travel to places and ask me where to go for beer, I can usually name a brewery that makes pretty good beer in the area. The thing that sparked the thought was that a friend should try Cubano Espresso since hes in FL. I mean, people come to where I live, and I point them right where they need to go.

My thing is sometimes, I feel like I know too much. Like Im that guy. Now being that guy isnt a bad thing, but I shouldnt know breweries and specific beers when Ive never even been to the area.

I think it's good to be knowlegable in your interests/hobbies/etc. Especially since you've tried the beer and then from what your friends tell you about the places. Keep getting that knowledge!

Knowledge is power, brother. Knowing too much is not an issue.

Don't fret. Perhaps you don't really know breweries and their beers if you haven't been to the area.

lol if you ask my gf this is a way too expensive hobby, but now I will just tell her it's all worth it because I am aspiring to be Vincent. It's like a baseball player wanting to be Babe Ruth, stoaked to bring this up at dinner lol

There's a big difference between being knowledgeable and being a know-it-all.

I feel like the knowledge is so relative though. I'll go on here and I know basically nothing compared to most of the members and around my friends I'm the "beer snob".

Of course I reply beer advocate!

I love talking about beer, and like to think I know at least a little bit about it. But at the same time, I don't like being seen as an authority on the subject by others who know less. Makes me feel weird.

I'd much rather speak with someone who, to me, sounded like they were speaking a foreign language.

Being on sites like this skews perceptions. I thought my brother in law (who's been drinking craft and home brewing for years) knew a lot about beer, now after being on this site only for a few months I find it difficult to talk beer with him because he has no idea what I am talking about most of the time.

When I gave him Zombie Dust and some Alpha King he had no idea who Three Floyds were and was perplexed by the whole trading scene.

    -Exactly.

-I agree with the skewing this site can do. I know about Cigar City, you know about Cigar City, and that brewery is at least on the radar of most BA's. But still, they aren't close to being in the public vernacular at the moment. I bout had to crack on somebody at a tasting for getting hauty with my wife when she asked who Cigar City was.

-And about your brother... I'm fixing to start home brewing, and the people who I know who do it really are following the papazion "relax" approach. I'm racking my brain and skimming home brewing forums trying to get a sense of how I will make the perfect beer right out of the box and getting all worked up about it, and they are just doing it.

a man that knows something knows that he knows nothing at all...

I get asked much the same way... I get called an expert or connoisseur or whatever... I always reply that I'm simply an enthusiast with an opinion and an advocate for good beer

Kzoobrew knows nothing!!!! I'm kidding I love ya Kevin.

I was having this conversation on my lunch break with a guy who works with me and came to my 30th Birthday party. He said it was like walking into the gugenheim and having a conversation with a curator since there were A few BA's there. He felt out of place. I tried to reassure him, we aren't different from him, weve just been doing it a lot longer have fiqured out what we like and what we dont. I said, once you start trying new things and picking up on the little things you can share too. I likened it when he played sports and his buddy showed him a new move in football vs. telling him I am better than Joe Montana.

    Good answer here too.

    Cheers!

Be careful of true knowledge or attempts at a scholarly vocabulary and nonstop posting.
These guys are obvious. The guys that are too serious are not the ones to listen too. This should be a fun hobby!
