I feel the need to comment on every single freaking thread on this site and, yet, am not a Poo-Bah. Something is amiss.

This is why I still haven't thrown away my other 3 bottles of '15 BCBS. I have no clue what I can or will do with them, but I know drinking them just isn't a choice. I tried so hard to power through my last bottle and couldn't make it despite splitting it.

Yeah- it was really bad... think I waited until Thanksgiving 2016 to crack mines and it was horrendous.. it being a holiday- we had like 10 other great beers to open and the 3 of us just couldn't even. Not sure if it was the only 'special' beer of that particular day we would have finished it either...

I cracked mine open with a '16 and '17 on Christmas last year after much anticipation with my brother, who had just started exploring beer. It was also my first BCBS vertical. Then I remember the feeling of shock when my first, and only, share with him was 1/3 infected.

Come on now. Arkansas is neither flat, brown, nor midwestern! If the Southerners around here heard you say they'd be insulted!:rofl:

Oh god I laughed so hard it hurt. Haha. I'm sorry man. I've been to Oklahoma, and I just figured I'd seen everything within a thousand mile radius. I'll put my broad brush away. That's right...don't you have a portion of the Ozarks? Or am I getting even further away with my geography?

Yep. We have the Ouachitas amd Ozark mountains. In your defense, I thought it was flat and brown until I moved here and tried to buy a home with a flat backyard. And if the use of y'all, sir, and ma'am are any indication, we are in the deep south!

At this rate, it'll probably have to happen that way, as every time I get close the powers that be move the carrot. Sorta like what the BA does with Sam Adams except in reverse.

Can you cook with it? Or will it make the food taste bad?

That's what I'm wondering. I guess the best way to find out is just cook with it. I imagine it wouldn't impart much of that tart cherry, but I'll find out.

    Shelf beer:

A perfectly fine, enjoyable, consistent beer that is readily available, in draft and/or packages, regularly and beer nerds tend to not get excited about. The beers that most folks who drink craft beer buy at the grocery store.

Thanks. I thought it was just a made up term that doen't mean anything , kind of like a beer (I don't remember the name)I had that was labeled "ESB". I had no idea what it meant, so I asked the bartender. It stands for Extra Special beer

Neither the bartender doesn't know the correct meaning of ESB or you misheard. It's Extra Special Bitter, although there is nothing extra special about its level of bitterness.

P.S. Welcome to the BA site.

It means something (because "double" and "witbier" convey meaning to a beer geek), but it's also a bit of a made up term (because it's just a combination of words rather than a "double witbier" being a convention on its own). You'll see lots of shades of grey with styles. I might bet that Southampton Publick House was one of the first to put the terms together to get their "Double White" witbier. It's a little funny to see their current six pack holder with "true to style" (or something to that effect) on it since a "double" witbier isn't exactly "true to style." It's not like lots of other brewers have followed in their "double white" footsteps.

Your ESB mention is a perfect example of more shades of grey. @Mothergoose03 is right, it really stands for "extra special bitter." What makes this term an oddball is that in England, "ESB" isn't a style of beer; it's a brand of beer, as in Fuller's ESB. Practically speaking, nobody in England makes beers in a style they call ESB. On the other hand, as an indirect result of imported Fuller's, American brewers attempting to make English style bitter (most?) often call their beer an ESB. As a result, American beer geeks tend to think of ESB as a style of beer rather than a brand. But to go even deeper, one can argue that American ESBs are a thing that represents a terminology evolution. I'm more of a weirdo purist, so I'll never say a beer is in the ESB style. Why claim that something is in an English style if you're not going to actually use style terms as they'd be in England? It's counterproductive. The icing on the cake is that Fuller's is happy to claim that their ESB is the originator of a style rather than just a strong bitter. It certainly helps their marketing to claim that their beer spawned a legion of imitators.

Why bore you with this nonsense? Well, just to put the idea of styles in a framework for you that doesn't view things as absolutes. Cheers and have fun on your beer journey.
