http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/...he-bracket-to-find-the-best-brews-in-america/ Not the best bracket, but our club is getting the beers together to do our tasting out of fun. Head to head, etc. Only beer I've not seen is the Narragesset coffe stout. Is that found locally in NoVa or Md?
Just came across this and, while I certainly applaud them for their efforts and the time they put into creating the bracket, some of the match ups and styles are completely off. OTWOA vs. Stone Go To? I get that both are listed in the Hop category, but one's a DIPA and the other is a Session IPA. Two very different variations of the style that shouldn't be pitted against each other. OTWOA vs. Enjoy By would have made a lot more sense. Also, Tart of Darkness in the Malt bracket? Sure, the beer contains roasted malts, but it's a sour through and through. And it sticks out like a sore thumb when the majority of the other beers in the category are oatmeal, coffee stouts and porters. One thing I don't have an issue with is the beers selected. While no one will argue that it's the best selection the US has to offer, the criteria stated that in order to be selected, every beer had to be widely available in at least 2 DC jurisdictions. So, that obviously MASSIVELY cuts down the selection but at least stays true to area/audience this bracket was intended for.
so a bunch of random national beers with a bunch of random local beers mixed in. the selection is just very random - like they picked the beers via throwing darts blindfolded.
They do this every year, it's light hearted and not really serious, just a bunch of fun. I used to post it every year here, but it ends up turning into a flame and $hitshow on the boards here every time (they picked that beer?! I CAN'T BELIEVE IT, [person grabs mob and torches] ) so I stopped posting it. always fun to look at the results.
I came here to saw the same thing. It's fun and I look forward to it every year, somethings just aren't worth the debate.
That's kind of my angle.. I can totally see perhaps some criticism of say Old Chub going against Founders Porter and the mismatches in style, but that's not what they are going for... Also love the one persons comments about how come Heady and Pliny Younger aren't on this list, uh.. cause you wont find those beers in the area in DC??? hello??? Just have a beer man...
Agreed. My ale sampling club thought it fun to try out the bracket for ourselves and see the results. To call this list to best or even the top beers is crazy talk.
