    First, the poll - and excuse me if my terminology is off - but I see three common styles of mug (for poll purposes, assume everything else about the mugs is identical):

    "Fluted"

    "Dimpled"
    [​IMG]
    "Plain"
    [​IMG]
    "Other" (for example, the "hybrid" mug shown below)
    [​IMG]

    And my question:

    Do (or did) the different styles have a history or serve a purpose (like how the nonic pint's design assists in stacking and gripping), or is it just about aesthetic appeal/looks?

    Dimpled for sure. You can get some great heavy duty dimpled mugs at Dollar Tree.

    Nearly all of mine are German krugs, either 1L or .5L. Half are dimpled, some are multifaceted straight sides, some are smooth, some are ceramic.

    I only have two mugs, a giant Oktoberfest mug of damnation I got last year at a fest, and the Sierra Nevada Maritime Mug. I don't really have a preference but I guess I think the plain or fluted ones look the best.

    Thanks for the advice @tstigz ! Gonna check my local Dollar Tree for the dimpled mug. Can't have too much traditional glassware. Oktoberfest is just around the corner!

    Here's the kind I have - from Target I believe. I usually use something from my Libbey set, but for more poundable, or Oktoberfest brews, these are AWESOME.
