A good friend of mine just moved to Lubbock, TX and is having trouble finding a decent shop to buy beer. Can anyone on here help out? Not looking for special release stuff, just solid beers to drink.

Lubbock is not a beer mecca. It is far from a beer mecca.

With that said, I spent a couple of years there. His best bet is Spec's. For the Cali OP, Spec's is the chain big box liquor store of Texas. More or less, they will have the greatest selection of stuff. I have seen Prairie there, but you will not get things like Jester King or some of the smaller breweries in TX. But, they do have a beer department with some guy who seems to like beer, so there is hope.

For what it's worth, I am not jealous of him moving there by a long shot.

@TacosNbeers I could not really tell you what they have and do not have anymore.

A good place to look would be www.seekabrew.com and compare the distributions (or just look to see what we get in TX). The only issue with that is that Lubbock does not get all of the distribution (that Austin/Dallas/Houston gets).

Most of the bigger craft beers on the website Lubbock will get (Great Divide, New Belgium, Odell, Founders, etc) but I doubt they get some of the smaller ones (Elevation, Jester King, etc). I know I have seen Prairie on a shelf there - but likely no Bomb, and I picked up a Brooklyn Black Ops from the Specs there. There is one brewery in Lubbock (Wicked Beaver) that is mediocre at best (I would actually stay away from their Black beer....tastes like burnt malts). But, you never know what you may find. My suggestion - have him ask the beer guy there what special beers he has for a friend in Cali. He may have some bomb stashed away or some KBS. Who knows.

In Lubbock today for work, stopped by Specs. Much better than I was thinking it would be. Including about 8 Old Rasputin XVI just sitting on the shelf, if only there was this selection when I was here

No crap....I was stuck making the runs out to Doc's weekly in college and the best you would get was some Dogfish stuff. Glad to see that it is slowly changing up there. Crafthouse has a decent beer selection as well....probably the only decent gastropub in town now.

I was up there in the fall and the Specs I went to had a nice selection of craft beer. I have a friend that lives there and he's been able to order some stuff that Dallas gets... regulars at least... that they don't always have in Lubbock.

Wish I was heading up for the spring game this Saturday.
