My fiance and I will be visiting San Diego for Beer Week. She has booked the Marriott in Old Town, which, from what Google Maps tells me is somewhat away from any beery action. So. my question, are there recommendations for this area - beerwise, of course. We have no plans to rent a car, so self motorvating is not an option.
I can tell you that there's a great store to buy nice beer just east of PCH on Rosecrans. I think it's called Fuller's. Besides having a generally good selection, I've often found special, unique beers there that I haven't seen at other stores. As far as bars IDK what to tell you. I live right near there but never go craft beer drinking in old town.
Old Town may not be walkable to a lot of places, but it is a major public transit hub. You can get directly to Ocean Beach and the Gaslamp, and from the Gaslamp you can get directly to the 30th St. beer corridor.
In old town is a pretty decent bottle shop called Keg Guys. There's also a major Trolley Station which will get you to Mission Hills (Where you'll find The Regal Beagle), Little Italy, and Downtown (Where there are several options including Neighborhood and Best Damn Beer Shop). You could even try taking it east and get out to Hoffer's in La Mesa. You're also within <$20 cabfare to Point Loma and OB.
You would definitely miss out if you didn't take the trolly downtown to hit up Neighborhood and Knotty Barrel. Also, while its a bit of a gimmick, gaslamp stripclub is a fine place to eat (assuming you can grill your own steaks), and typically has sculpin on tap. Point Loma offers a Stone Company store, as well as San Diego's first (and to date only) slaters 50/50. A build your pen burger joint known for it's 50% beer 50% bacon patty. From old town, you should also be roughly $20 cab fare to coronado brewing company, which is starting to seriously expand into the greater SOCAL market. Homebrew Mart shouldnt be too far away either, which hosts a balast point tasting room (small bottle selection, but the staff is super chill and you can try a bunch of things). Otherwise, being stuck in oldtown allows you to do some touristy things like visit the whaley house. And actually, that's about it :/
