So the other night my wife pulled out her fancy whipped cream siphon to make some delicious lavender infused whipped cream and I got to thinking, could I use this device to nitro charge my beer? I looked online and couldn't find anything. So I decided to just wing it. I took a Founder's Porter and poured it into a pint glass to let the carbonation settle and then popped it into the siphon (link). I was debating on how to dispense it and was initially thinking I would purge the gas and then open it up to pour out the liquid. At the last minute I changed my mind, prepared for a large mess, and pulled the trigger with the dispenser facing down. To my surprise, it didn't make a mess at all and produced a perfect glass of beer with that silky nitrogen texture. It literally took one minute to do this. Try it out and let me know if you have any other tweaks that will perfect it! Now to buy more n2o cannisters!

Damn, this sounds pretty bad-ass if it really works! =) Cool experiment man!

When I was trying to find info online if anyone had tried this before, I came up with nothing but I did find a site that talked about infusing liquor with herbs or coffee. It might be worth trying to infuse coffee into a stout or even bourbon! Alas, I have no cartridges left. It is probably better that way or else I would be hammered by mid afternoon!

Try some other beers and post back your opinions. I suspect the thicker bodied beers would work best, some of the lighter ones might turn watery and metallic.

So, when a beer like Guinness or LH Milk Stout is on nitro-pour at a bar, is it Nitrogen or N2O that is used? Is Nitrogen and N2O so close to each other that one can be used in substitution of the other? Obviously I know nothing about Chemistry. I believe the OP that this works but, according to Wikipedia, N2O (Nitrous Oxide) is an oxide of Nitrogen and therefore different so how can it give the same results?

This is the best thing I've seen posted here in a long time.

"Nitro" beers in bars are poured with a CO2/N2O mix called BeerGas. Seems like this method just adds some N20 to the already carbonated beer, so I'd think you could end up with something very much like what you get from a nitro-pour at a bar.

Geocool, that was my logic! At first I thought that nitro beer was all nitrogen and no co2 until I remembered that, duh, beer already has co2 in it. So I just poured the beer in the siphon and away I went.

Haha, I desperately need more cartridges! Actually I am not at all a fan of nitro ipas. I might just have to try it for experimentation's sake though!

That's right, I forgot it wasn't straight Nitrogen but rather a mixture. You're right, this method is probably almost if not just as effective. Thanks.

It's Nitrogen in the beer gas, not N2O (Nitrous Oxide). Otherwise those beers might make you king of giggly...

Well, the excess gas in the siphon can be used for "other purposes." Waste not, want not!

Hmmm....I didn't realize those things ran on Nitrogen, always thought they were CO2 based. Learn something new every day.

You are right of course, I should have said N2. But does anyone know what's in the cartridges for this whipped cream siphon thingy? Store bought whipped cream cans do have N2O in them I believe. Please kids, no huffing!

It's N2O in the whipped cream chargers. Same as the Redi-whip stuff. Laughing gas.

Hmmmm, I wonder if the Oxygen in there could oxidize the beer? Probably no big deal since this trick would only be used immediately before consumption.
