I've certainly encountered this in Vietnam, but I wouldn't go so far as to call it common. Maybe in the more rural areas.

Many years ago, I spent a short time near Ensenada with a good friend, an underwater engineer, diving for abalone. We drank mostly tequila. I don't really remember seeing any ice anywhere. My brother in law used to just about freeze his Bub Lights to slushy stage. I still think that's weird. To each his own!

Just to be clear about cider/ice in the UK and Ireland - Bulmers/Magners (owned by Heineken - aka macro cider shite) is heavily marketed as being served over ice. God knows why. I think to make it seem extra refreshing - especially in the summer. The trend seems to have spread to other shitty cider like Strongbow. Anyone drinking decent/proper cider is as unlikely to put ice in it as they would into beer.

It used to be a serving suggestion on the label of Haffenreffer Private Stock Malt Liquor.

Indeed, beer has moved forward according to a good article BA did about the craft movement in Vietnam. Amazing to consider the practice still exists at all. I wonder how common it ever was? It was certainly common enough to have been mentioned in numerous things I've read.

I used to frequent a bar where they'd stick the entire pint glass in the freezer. It would get all frosty, and then they'd serve the beer in that. Go figure.

I've seen this done in Boston, Ireland, and Britain, I just think some people like beers extra cold.

This seemed to be a common practice in the areas of Thailand I visited in 2004. Beer (Singha, Chang) was always served with a glass of ice. Probably not coincidentally, it was also served warm.

To each their own...... We had an old timer pour Miller Lite into a glass half filled with ice and tomato juice.

Maybe it's as simple as.... the colder your beer is, the less that you can taste it. Non beer lovers can down a beer under those conditions.

I think the only way I'd try it would be on a sweltering day in the summer with only warm - hot AALs available (why they're not in the cooler makes it fantasy). Probably drink it so fast not much ice would melt :sunglasses:

About 20 years ago I bartended at a place in ME. An old timer would come in every day and get a bottle of Miller High Life, a glass of ice and a salt shaker. He would pour the beer over the ice and salt the brew before each sip.

Everybody here seems to plan their drinking better than me. Many's the time I've been home with an hour to kill before I have to be somewhere and only warm beer. Chop the ice up as fine as the fridge will, half fill a glass and go. Stick the half empty bottle in the freezer to cool down during the minutes you spend on part 1. Pour part 2. Contemplate part 3....

    Cider on ice is great.

I've thrown the odd whiskey stone into a beer when I've arrived home, dying for a drink and all I have is the shelf warm 6 pk I picked up

While we are one the subject of strange things in beer glasses. On my first visit to the bar after moving to Minnesota, I encountered a man drinking a large mug of AAL with a whole pickle floating in it. Looked rather strange in the glow of the neon lights.

    Cheers!

Lol sounds like my father! If he orders a beer at a restaurant, he orders a glass of ice to go with it. Says he “really likes cold beer and if there a enough ice and you don’t really water down the beer.” Granted, he started doing this way before the craft beer trend. When drinking cheap beers like Budweiser and other largers, I don’t think people drink them for taste, so who cares, if they enjoy it that way, let them. Of course, I would never let him do that if we are sharing one of my craft beers.
