Dude, im 30. According to my girlfriend: every dollar I spend on beer is one less dollar I should be saving for an engagement ring.

Food to beer ratio 1:10? Not bad at all. I have cereal, lentils, some veggies for smoothies, condiments, and the rest is all beer. And that's just in the fridge. My vintages and aging beers are not refrigerated.

Food? That's for the fridge at my g/f's place. Mine is for beer.

Would be interested in hearing your thoughts and suggestions on getting into homebrew for $100 or less.

No joke, I feel like I'm the only young married guy here who's currently in the process of buying his first house and having his first kid. Kind of a bad time to start really getting into craft beer.

Or you could get married, buy that house you speak of have and a boat load more space to store beer...

I am just retired on fixed income and no 2nd income atm, which sucks, I am hoping the economy jumps more here soon. Things rock when I can get a side job... love that extra free spending cash flow.:grinning: BTW I hated being retired. but no 1 wants an old HB to work in their brewery and PAY them,,,, lol. To be honest I doubt I am strong enough anymore to do it.

She doesn't give me shit for my beer and has actually contributed to my collection. If she complained about the money I spent on beer, all I need to do is gesture to her closet and the insane amount of clothes she owns. Makes my beer habit look like child's play. I take good care of her. She knows not to complain.

I don't know when getting into craft beer started to require boatloads of extra cash. There are probably hundreds and hundreds of ~$10 6pack beers you have yet to try.

That's in the works but there's not a lot I can do about the money soon to be spent on mini-me.

Been there, done that! Dude, I heard it for 3 years and I'm close to your age (I'm 28) so I bet it's the same kinda stuff. I knew I wanted to, I just kept putting it off and putting it off. I finally pulled the trigger a few weeks ago, and life has been very pleasant since! Just do it! And plus, she'll give you less grief about buying beer .

Sorry to hi-jack thread OP, but dude wants to know. Here's is what I spent on equipment for my first batch:

    40 quart pot - $40
    6.5 gallon fermenting bucket w/ lid - $21.50
    Tubing/Bottle filler - $9
    Auto Siphon - $13
    Bottling Bucket - $4
    Thermometer - $2
    Hydrometer - $5
    Bottle Caps - $4

$98.50. I already had a capper and bottles. And cheaper buckets, auto siphons and tubing can be found. If you're brewing 5 gallon batches or less, smaller and less expensive pots can be found. You also don't technically NEED an auto siphon, it's just so much easier (and better) to use, you also don't NEED a bottle filler, but again, easier and better than the old school siphon method.

So less than $100 for basic brewing equipment. How much anyone wants to expand, is up to them!
