I wanted to get the consensus opinion here, because I launched a discussion last night with my brother in law on this topic and we disagreed completely. (However, we did agree to crack a Westveleteren XII for my 30th birthday early, since he's out of town for the big-show in a couple weeks).

I mentioned i finally caved and registered here after years of logging my beers on an old private board we had in college (similar to this, but smaller scale, still used for trading occasionally).

I also mentioned that I was going to try and move as many of my ratings over here as I could, since i have a pretty healthy backlog already, and want to bring this profile "up to snuff".

He called bullshit and said I have to log going forward. I thought that was stupid, since I tend to try new things, and rarely go back to beers I've already had (unless they are those special "must have when availables"). For instance, I have had every Surly Darkness since release, but should I log them?

    Decisions decisions.

Are your previous ratings to the same rating scale as the Beer Advicate reviews? If so, I don't see a problem. You can't rate multiple vintages though so pick one Darkness year to input a review, just make sure you state what year it was.

I find my personal tastes change over time. Kind of like with food as well. Used to be able to eat super hot spicy foods, now I don't care for them as much. Hated brussel sprouts, now love them. Beers I used to think were very good, I don't care for now and vice versa. But then again, anyone's rating on this board is merely a snap shot in time of what they had in front of them and what and how they rated it. If a beer went through a significant change in some way between the time you drank and reviewed it and now, putting the review up now probably wouldn't have a lot of value - other than posterity.

If it is on a 5 scale then I don't see why not. I guess any scale would be fine, assuming you can do basic math.

It's fine. People bring their lists from other sources here, and take their BA lists to other places (Untappd, RB) regularly. It's just electrons, they'll make more.

I'd say to throw them all up there, but then again the ratings don't mean much to me.

I don't see any problem with bringing over your old ratings. You drank the beers, you rated them, why should it matter what site you were a member of at the time?

I would add "Reviewed from notes taken on [Date]" to those reviews, if for no sake but your own. I think it's sort of rare for people to actually read through other peoples reviews, but this way if they do, they will know approximately what batch you had and when you drank it. Beer changes, so that's helpful information. I do this occasionally from hand written notes, so I see no difference doing it from notes on another website.

Completely acceptable but don't go from memory.

Beer Advocate frowns on rating beers from memory but if you have your reviews written down then go for it.

I do this. I'll write reviews up & mean to input them in a timely manner. Some times there's a rather long delay.

    I've got log books!

But i'll probably only do the ones from the last few months, and some special ones.

That's ridiculous. If you reviewed the beer in the past, you should feel free to update your rating here. Vintage is relevant, as some beers change year to year, so any useful info you have should be listed. But you should definitely feel free to upload your ratings, as it were.

Just remember BA is not a 0-5 scale. It is 1-5. 3 is the middle, not 2.5.
I've been called out over this and had to correct the other person, politely.

Generally, electrons are neither created nor destroyed.
