Can anyone recommend a second refrigerator to store beer in? Ideally, it's smaller than a standard refrigerator (but not a mini "college dorm" fridge), doesn't have a freezer, and is sized/built to maximize the amount of interior space to store upright bottles (12 oz. and bombers) and 16 oz. cans. Everything I've seen so far caters to 12 oz can storage (at best). Any help, suggestions, etc. are greatly appreciated.
I ended up buying the Whirlpool WRF57R18DM and it works pretty good form my needs. Nothing I found had better shelf spacing or flexibility to customize shelf position. An added benefit, the fridge even has a locking door. I have a Johnson Controls temperature regulator that keeps it at around 50 degrees. Runs quiet. The only downside is that the swing of the door cannot be changed (swings from left to right). Hope this helps.
I have a very similar fridge and love it. I would recommend to the OP try to avoid wire shelving and go with a glass or glass like shelving.
Can you elaborate as to why you don't like wire shelving? is it that the spacing isn't very convenient?
Sure thing. Wire shelving poses a few problems. First, it has gaps in between each wire which can and will cause bottles to not stand up perfectly straight. Tilting and domino effect will ensue. Second, in my experience wire shelving tends to bend more that a glass shelve. Third, any spills on the top wire shelf is going to end up at the very bottom vs being contained in a glass shelf situation, cleanup is much easy with glass.
Now if you do buy a fridge with no other options than wire shelving. You can always pick up some plexiglass at lowes or Home Depot.
I have one of these http://www.fogel-group.com/sites/default/files/v-280-bdc.pdf Works very well for me. You can find them used very easily when you search for merchandisers.
I replaced the wire shelves in mine with tempered safety glass and added a brace under each one. The glass cost about $18 per shelf to have it cut. If you do this, measure carefully. Also be aware that your fridge may not be square from front to back and you can't recut safety glass. The glass gave me more room, one more row from left to right and one more beer front to rear.
The fridge has three main shelves.... All glass. Plus the shelves have a bit of minor adjustment. On the top shelf, I have 9 rows of 12 oz beer bottles 6 bottles deep. So.. that's 54 bottles? The air chiller is mounted on the fridge ceiling so.. you have to put "squatyt" 12oz bottles in that row. Second shelf, I have 7 rows of 5 deep Firestone Walker boxes of Parabola, Abacus, Double DBA, etc. On the third shelf, I keep a bunch of miscellaneous items. The doors also hold a few beers. Below the third shelf are two levels of drawers which could be removed so that more beer can be added.
