A brand-spankin' new Short's six pack hit stores, this week!

--see you @ the Anny party!

Alien Einstein is a light bodied India Pale Lager with a dull golden color and an inviting aroma of tangy grapefruit juice. A bright burst of fruity and earthy hop flavors immediately hits the palate. This beer exemplifies the well-rounded versatility of the American Mosaic hops used exclusively in this beer.
    5.5% ABV
    75 IBU

While i was listening to the podcast last week about this beer it got me thinking. The enzyme that they used to strip away the gluten, is that just good for lager beers or would it work for all styles?

Also i have a few friends that have gluten allergies and are stoked to try this and "maybe be able to drink real beer again"

Stoked for this one, my wife has gluten issues so this can get her back into the beer game. At least we have great ciders and meads in Michigan to choose form as well.

I believe it works for all styles - Alpine, as far as I know, was planning to use in all their beers.

Along those lines, I wondered about using it in homebrewing. My girl has a gluten allergy (not fully blown celiac at least) and making all my homebrew relatively GF would pretty awesome.

It works better on some beers and not as well on others. We've experimented with Clarex on a number of brews. I don't see why it wouldn't work on a homebrewer scale.

Yeah, from the handy explainer on this beer...

    https://www.shortsbrewing.com/gluten-fighting-aliens-make-tasty-beer-humanity/

Why don’t you always use Brewer’s Clarex to make beer gluten-reduced?

When we found out about Brewer’s Clarex, we were giddy at the thought of developing a beer that could be enjoyed by those with a gluten-intolerance. Using Brewer’s Clarex in beer, however, is not as easy as dumping a bunch into a tank of conditioning beer and letting it do its magic. The enzyme is quite picky and has revealed itself to work much better in certain beers over others. We experimented quite a bit, and eventually determined that Alien Einstein, which is an incredibly delicious beer, worked perfectly for this process. This has been one of our favorite new Short’s Brews over the past couple of years, so lots of high fives and “Yessssss!’es” ensued since we knew we’d met our goal of taking a great beer to those affected by Celiac Disease.

Just picked some up! In the freezer now for the quick chill. Never had a "low" gluten beer, so should be interesting.

Yeah, it tastes like a real beer...which is pretty cool! My girl is definitely stoked. Props to Shorts for making a legit beer that can be drank by folks w/ gluten issues!

So .... my dad is allergic to gluten and has thus stopped his drinking of the finer IPAs (his favorite). Would this beer work for him to drink now??

(Not deathly allergic but enough to cause rashes. TMI maybe)

I would think it should be. The Shorts brewer said that all batches meet the 20 parts per million threshold that makes it drinkable for those with celiac disease (see https://www.shortsbrewing.com/gluten-fighting-aliens-make-tasty-beer-humanity/). Celiac is not an allergy but many people with it have pretty serious reactions to gluten. So, if it's safe for them I'd imagine it should be low enough to avoid allergic reactions as well.

Picked some up, pretty tasty. My benchmark IPL's are from Jack's Abby in MA and this isn't that, but a great warm weather brew with plenty of IBU's and lighter on the palate.

Friend of mine has the same level of issues, and drank three of them without breaking out, hope that helps, not sure if more would be an issue.

This is not completely gluten free, if he has celiacs and is very sensitive, he probably cant drink this. Liquor is distilled and contains very minimal, nearly non-existent amount of gluten. If he reacts to liquor, odds are he will react to this. Hope I am wrong and it works out, good luck!

Of all the hop-forward beers that Short's has been brewing lately, this has been my favorite. I don't know, every IPL I've had has been excellent. Mosaic was an outstanding choice.
