I'm waiting to see if anyone complains about the same strange taste from the lime as in previous years. I don't want to influence any opinions, so I'm not going to say what that strange flavor is at this point.

The lime is so subtle, the milk sugar just right and the graham cracker is a perfect finish. Exactly what it ya used like years ago when perfect on draft. Well done Shorts!

I've yet to try this year's. I bought a bottle but gave it to a bartender that really wanted to try it. Glad to hear the reviews have been mostly positive.

Any insight from regular visitors to the pub as to how long it might last in bottles there? Wasn't interested when it was released but family out-of-state is extremely interested in a six pack. Plan to be near Bellaire the weekend of the 18th. Would also accept SE Michigan suggestions (although I'm sure I'm mostly out of luck there). Thanks in advance.

My site review for anybody who hasn't had it yet...

Bottled 6/18/14. Poured into a Sam Adams Perfect Pint 6/29/14. $2.49 single. I've been wanting this since I first heard about it a few years ago, despite its underwhelming scores.

Appearance: Aggressive pour gives off a pop-like head that goes away quickly. The beer is a hazy dark amber color. No lacing.

Smell: Mostly unlike key lime pie. Smells more like the graham cracker crust. Lactose-y sort of milk aroma. Maybe a hint of sweetness probably from the limes, but it's not super pungent.

Taste/feel: That's a bit more like I was expecting. Sharp lime acidity at the start with a good lime flavor, but then a heavy biscuity sort of malt character at the end with sweetness to cut the lime a bit. The lime acidity is more prominent than an actual lime flavor. The graham cracker flavor helps give that sweetness and biscuity character on the finish to mellow out that almost lip puckering lime. I don't really get a creamy sort of quality that I associate with key lime pie, which is disappointing, and I'd never guess this beer was brewed with marshmallows. The feel is middle of the road with a moderate body and carbonation. Works pretty well.

Short's should consider an "imperial" version of this beer to see what happens. Make it a thicker, higher ABV beer, and get some more of a creamy quality into the beer. The graham cracker and lime tartness are perfect, but the full lime flavor and creamy sort of flavor isn't there like I'd want it to be.

Overall, it's a beer I'm absolutely glad to have FINALLY found and tried, but as a whole, the beer doesn't completely come together. Regardless of that, it's still a tasty, interesting beer that'll no doubt get people talking if they see you drinking it. By comparison, it's similar to Short's Cake with lime in place of strawberries, but I think I may like this one a liiittle bit more.

    (3.66/5)

I also emailed Short's about the possibility of a pilsner [or some other style] brewed with... uhm... honey and sunflower seeds. I thought it could be something interesting and a little tasty. Who knows. I expect an, "Are you mad? Gross."

    Imperial Abnormal Genius
is a golden Ale is brewed with honey and sunflower seeds. A distinct aroma of peanut butter emits from this deep golden caramel-colored ale. Enjoyable honey flavors dominate the simple malt profile. This perfect blend of flavors leads to a finish that’s not overly sweet, bitter or dry, but a wonderful balance of all three qualities.

    You gotta be kidding me.

...Literally wow. I've never seen that in my life. And it's Short's. Effing creepy.

I figured it'd taste like Honey Nut Cheerios or something. Anyway, uh. That's scary.

I'm still really creeped out. Of course it's entirely possible I read about it awhile back, blocked it out consciously, then it came up without me realizing. And to think I emailed Senior Brewmaster... he's going to make fun of me. And brew a beer with my namesake. [Like I'd even complain.]

    Best bar in the area.

Any news on the tap expansion? Next year?

Reminds me of last week. I was talking to my friend about brewing a Mint IPA. I've never heard of a Mint IPA before and I thought it would be fun to try. Not two days later I get No Label Brewing's Mint IPA as an extra in a box from Texas... REAL creepy.

things have been a CLUSTER this year with trying to line renovations up, but next year is the goal. you live in New Baltimore right? we're just waiting for the right place to go under and we think we will snatch it up and bring great beer and food out to macomb/chesterfield/new baltimore area. fingers crossed. also, we're doing a Short's Pint Night August 11. It'll be with a cask and randall. Randall will be Bellaire Brown with Hazelnut coffee i believe. trying to out do ourselves each time is getting harder and harder, lol.
