I live near Seattle, and I have a few friends who will be visiting Chicago for IMTS (12-17 September). I personally visit my in-laws in Chicago from time to time, so a lot of the year round offerings in the area are familiar to me. I've told them to seek out Pipeworks, 3 Floyds, Bells, Founders, Half Acre, Sixpoint -- the big names I can't get in Seattle that I look for in Chicago.

Are there any seasonal beer releases near that time I should advise them to look for? Packaged or tap is of interest -- they'll want to drink good stuff there, and bring some home as well.

I also recommended Haymarket's Fresh Hop Mathias. This beer blew my mind when I randomly tried it a couple years ago, when I went to IMTS.

Just like every other beer release in the country you have no idea untill announcements are made. Just watch Off Colors, Goose Island Clybourne, Half Acre, ect respective twitter feeds for updates.

I agree with @jlsims04 - check back with us when it gets closer and we should have a better idea if there is anything on the near term horizon at the time. I'm not good enough at remembering at this time what may usually hit around that time of year.

I'd say the chance of them finding some good draft events are high - there seems to be a few things every week that I want to go to (but only end up going to about 1 per month :slight_frown:).

1 for sure is Half Acre's Gone Away which is an IPA that returns in August (and is brewed through March). As others have stated it's mostly hard to know until then but this is one

Anything limited you'll need to be here on the day of the release or you'll likely miss it.

This is the truth. But, if your buddies are willing to try and trade for something that will be available the week or two before, you could always do that as well.
